Surprised no one has actually started a thread on this one yet with Demons Souls becoming a sleeper hit on the PS3.
So, bought it earlier this week, got the limited edition with digital mini guide, artbook, soundtrack CD, DVD all wrapped up in a nice outer carboard box. Been waiting on this game for so long now I had very high expectations of it.
Now around 17 hours in progress has been very slow.
Initially the thoughts in the Asylum starting area is that it is just like Demons Souls with the way it plays, combat it visceral, walking around to make sure you dont get ambushed and taken out. First demon that you come across is literally just a taster of what is to come.
Once you leave the Asylum, everything changes. You still learn from your mistakes but the game does pull a few dirty tricks on you to kill you off. Another thing with this is that it is open world, so go forth adventuring but if you head into the wrong area then you have no chance of suceeding. A lot of the time you arnt overly sure where you are supposed to be heading.
Enemies on this game are extremely tough, as you get stronger you learn what they are going to do so you will be able to get through initial areas blindfolded which can be handy for early grind to get souls to level up. Bosses on the other hand are just OTT, the battles are aimed at melee characters primarily. Guess this is what the developers wanted just so they could kill you off numerous times and send you back to the bonfire you last saved at.
Previously on Demons Souls you could tackle the bosses any way you wanted, on this one though its a case of melee, you try to back off during a fight to use ranged then the boss will move on you fast or fire some sort of high powered projectile that is tough to dodge or block, or even have a weapon that has an extremely long reach that cant be blocked effectively. Its like a huge difficulty spike basically.
I fought on with Demons Souls and managed to learn it, went through it twice to see both endings. This on the other hand has nearly been shelved a few times already. Thing is though it is a case of one more go at that boss or venture forth into a new area.
Online side of things you have to be in human form (similar to Demons) to be able to summon blue phantoms (other players basically). Only minor drawback with this is the humanity system. You get humanity points off corpses, or killing so many enemies in a new area. You dont get it from killing a boss or tough enemy and you dont revive to human form. Thing is also, you die then die again trying to get back to your bloodstain you lose any humanity points you had aquired with no way of actually recouping them as you have received the points already for working away across the level. So being able to get back to being human to be able to summon someone else for a tough battle can be really awkward. Just seems that the online component is something that they havnt really done anything to spur it along with the way the humanity works. Another decent aspect of online is that you still get the messages you got in Demons that can warn you of a trap or enemy ahead, only minor downside to this is the same as Demons, people putting them in stupid places like right next to bonfires or at the bases of ladders. Inevitably you can end up clicking the message instead of the ladder or bonfire, minor gripe I know but trying to escape up a ladder away from a mob but clicking a message instead of the ladder can be annoying.
Its damned good I have to admit and you keep wanting to play. I just feel they need to balance out the boss fights and sort the online component out.

My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?
