    QuakeIII in real-time raytracing!!!

Oh for the life of a student. A German student to be precise.

For a project, students of two universties in Germany attempted to run a game with real-time raytracing, lighting etc effects. Anyone who's tried 3d max/lightwave can tell you rendering with these options on with a few k polys and a few lights normally takes a few minutes per frame.

So what you need is a powerful pc. Actually 20 clustered XP1800s to be precise. With a total combined processing power of 36Ghz

It doesnt look all that impressive from the pics, but i'm reliably told the movies you can download (from below) are jaw-dropping.

http://graphics.cs.uni-sb.de/~sidapohl/egoshooter/ (click downloads on the left 56Mb)
The FPS's of the future maybe?

the 5 1/2 year old engine really shows it poly count wrinkles, but the details in the walls are immense. Who needs Doom3?

scuse my rampant ignorance..but does this mean someone is trying to use a new game engine to run old games....with added real time lighting effects and similar.

COs if so...sadly...you're right, the screenies look just like old Q3 to me

Does the combined might of all those XP1800's give it the ability to do the graphics calculations WITHOUT a graphics accelerator and therefore more headroom?

Basically mapping what real photons would do if they were introduced to your virtual scene..

Unfortunately Q3 is so damned old it looks pap when raytraced..

*But* if you throw more detail into a model and use better textures you end up with stuff like this:

    (")_(")

Just watched the video and OH MY GOD! give it 4 years, it will be the standard and games like doom 3 and HL will look crap.

The spinning mirror in that video sent my eyes funny and no doubt some game developers are gonna use it in a game soon to create a very mind warping level.

Depends if the Crytec is able to use multithreads. Carmack made Q3 multithread enabled so people could run it on multi-cpu platforms which is why i think they've used it (and its opengl so they can freely screw with the api).

If they used more detailed, uncompressed textures (photo bmps?) i spose it would look the dogs bollocks.

    Sites gone down
I dont like sig pics so i turn off sigs Which doesnt help when i dont know what ive written here! DOH!

well, the difference is mainly in the clarity and the lighting, but yeah, unless you put better models and textures in, it will look quite poor..

Did Carmack not initially want to model photons and start with ray tracing when he started coding the doom 3 engine? Pretty sure he at least tried it at an early stage.

The man is crazy! But all the more of a genius for it
