Steam Hacked, Credit Card Data At Risk

Steam Hacked, Credit Card Data At Risk http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/121/1212201p1.html
Gabe Newell announced today that Steam's database and forums have been hacked. According to Newell, Steam's forums were defaced earlier this week, and further investigation led to evidence that the hackers had obtained access to the Steam database.

Do ya reckon there's a credible threat from this? I've got my debit card account linked to my Steam account with quite a lot of money in it.

Is there any way to remove my details for now?

Re: Steam Hacked, Credit Card Data At Risk

I was wondering why the steam forums were down for long and I got word that it was hacked but I didn't anticipate something like this.

I'm hoping it doesn't turn out like the PSN fiasco.

Probably a bit late for that. Changing your card would be better if vyou're worried about it.

If that were me, I would notify my bank of what has happened. And exactly that happened to me (though not with Steam) a couple of years ago. I was in the process of moving some money around, had a very large balance in my current account at the time and a shop had it's database hacked. Why the hell they had my debit card details on their database beats me, but I notified the bank of the mere risk that the details had been compromised, and they reacted immediately - and cancelled the card.

It was a right pain and I was cardless on that account for about a week, but better that than risk either the money in the account, or the hassle of having to argue about it.

So ask yourself ..... safe, or potentially sorry?

My advice - if in any doubt, call the bank. I might have risked it on a credit card, as it might be a hassle but no real risk of loss, but on a debit card?

And that is one reason why I don't leave card details registered at PayPAL. I add a card, use it and then delete the card. Mind you, I don't use it much anyway. The last time was months ago. I'm not even sure I can find the login details.

I'm on the phone to the bank now to cancel the card. As you say Saracan, it's better to be safe than sorry.

EDIT: Shouldn't Steam be notifying all those with accounts of the threat of credit card theft? Surely they could send out a mass email or something just to warn people about the danger...

Quite. It's not worth the risk IMHO, especially with debit cards, which are less well protected.

I guess it's a balance. If, as stated, only encrypted card data was compromised, and they're not even sure if it was copied, just accessed, then they may be putting millions of people to hassle for nothing if they over-react. The statement they issued seems quite guarded, and more precautionary than anything.

Nonetheless, personally, I wouldn't risk it so I think you've done the right thing.

Re: Steam Hacked, Credit Card Data At Risk

So glad for the last few years I haven't kept my address and payment details on steam. Saw the message last night on a Steam Update screen when I left DoW2.

Changed the password etc and will have to wait to change the forum one. Thankfully the email address attached to it is a junk one so if it gets spammed then it's not a problem.

Amazing that I find out about this on gaming websites instead of an email or any sort of contact from Valve...Steam is not gonna be the poster boy after this!
