Someone will correct me if i'm wrong but IIRC its when your frame rate matches your screen refresh rate. So if you have an X800 and your playing quake 3 and your screen runs at 100Hz Refresh Rate then your card will only try to draw 100 FPS instead of 500+ This can be a useful feature as it can help ease the workload on your card but on newer games, running it can cause on screen problems as your card might not be able to draw 100Fps all the time in Far Cry (Do any at the moment?!) I run Vsync on UT2003 with my 9800Pro and it runs fine. Have to watch out on far cry though, i don't think my card could match my refresh rate on my settings!
Thats pretty much it in a nutshell.
PM me if you want a more detailed explanation

I don't know that much but the different render modes (supprise supprise) change the way the graphics are rendered. Default is fine, uses the standard graphics which look amazing, but if you play around with it, it will render the graphics differently, like if you play with it on cartoon edges become blurred, it looks like your in a cartoon and it looks like stuff is sketched. Playing in paradise makes it very bright and sunny, increases the hue and colouration of stuff. Go into the Video Menu on FC and you will see a little picture of the beach, change the render mode and watch the picture change. Its very good, i play with it on default but it can be cool to play on cold or cartoon. It is quite hard to see from the preview the diff between improved, paradise and default but play with 1 on and then take a screen and compare them later and you should see some difference.
Thats from my experience, don't really know much else about it though.
    Hope it helps though

It only really changes the way they look. So edges look different, the sky looks diff. Looks good though, cartoon is just funny. Set up a LAN game and then go into options>video modes> and change the render mode when ingame, you'll notice the difference. It's quite hard to notice the difference between improved and default. I'm not even sure if there is one....
