    Steaming pile of poop

Another steam update this morning, yay. Most people that play cs hate steam, I am no exception.
Steam is however, a good idea, but with a pathetic implementation.
whats suppost to happen is this:
Game has a bug -> small patch released over steam -> bug fixed, everyone happy.
    Which is to replace this:
Game is full of bugs -> Massive patch released onto thousands of mirrors -> Takes ages for everyone to update -> users are pissed off when they find the patch made the game worse, and less fun (aswell as fixing bugs).

In reality I find this is what happens with steam:
Playing game -> bug fix released -> Everyone forced to update through crappy slow steam servers -> game unavailable for about 3 days.

If thats not bad enough, the developers have decided to do almost daily updates, meaning a lot of gaming gets missed - not so bad if you just play now and then but if your in a clan, its not helpfull...

So there servers are crap - costs too much money for so much bandwidth (cs community is very large).
Yet they have so many people playing cs.
It amazes me why they dont just release patches as cache files (steam stores game content in cache files) so people dont have to reply on there crappy servers for a small patch.

If that isnt bad enough, ive been waiting all day for the patch, and it doesnt even try to update it untill you try to start the game - and it stops trying after the messge game is not available about 10 seconds after. Meaning lots of clicking all day to get one stupid small patch...

Bit torrent would be perfect for cs patches.

and they cant even update the changelog, its still from the 14th!!! ffs

... the thing which annoyed me about steam (well cs in particular), is that they decided to change the crosshair to some stupid 'scaled' one.. which seems to take up half the screen, even using the 'small' they seemed to implement after loads of people complained about it..

i mean ffs, if it aint broke dont fix it! they also changed the c4 timer thing so that when you plant the roundtime stops.. c'mon that gets rid of the tactics - you can hold off the T's for x seconds, and when its too late for them to plant you can run about and laugh at them (and try not to die)... they just seem to be making it aimed at newbies... which is stupid, because everyone used to be a newbie, but practice/effort/etc makes you better... *sigh* its too early for a rant

what I suggested, and was shot down for many moons ago was "update now, or update on a schedule" - especially for those of us not in the states!
imagine how convenient, 6am checks for updates while you're still asleep, downloads and installs them... groovy. or check before getting in the shower in the morning... whatever.
Damn sight easier - and have a client flag so say "don't automatically update" which can only be set if scheduled update is set - this way they can ensure file integrity (no cheaters) and you don't get shagged about by constant updates at inopportune times.

I have said it many times before - I SWEAR Valve block all traffic outside the US for the first few hours of a release so that the US ppl get it easier

I gave up on CS because of:
    a) I was fed up with them not bothering to fix stuff each update and then adding new stuff that doesn't work that well.
    b) Steam is the biggest load of sh*te I've seen in a long while, I wouldn't touch it with a barge poll, to much of a security risk and it's just poor, they couldn't handle the demand for CS when it was just realesed on the net, now it's just a sham. You imagine paying for this like is going to apparently happen with HL2. B*****ks! valve have really outdone themselves between this and the realese of HL2.

I think CS 2.0 is going to be a disapointment as well, they'll either try to make it more realistic which will make less fun to play, or it will just be a poor clone with updated graphics but no real re-work of the gameplay so it wont feel right (think Halo PC version) and it will probably be 5 years late.

Yeah - A few months after STEAM was released I just gave up. I was happy using mIRC HLTool to connect to servers and downloading the seperate patches But then STEAM came along and it all went pear shaped

Ever since Valve bought out the CS (it wasn't started by Valve, but when they saw there was a market they bought it from the developers for quite a large sum of money ) which is why IMO anything gameplay wise they change will just make it feel like Half Life 2 - which makes me think CS2.0 won't be any good.

    Delete the following file:
    "ClientRegistry.blob"

    From:
    D:\Games\HalfLife - Steam

and then update - it works for me.

i admit I do use steam for TFC and D0D tho - only cos its so damn hard to find old servers for them. CS1.5 servers are plentiful tho
