PC gaming is cheaper then Console gaming(according to IGN)

    http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/121/1214544p1.html

i stopped reading when i read this bit:

. Arguably the next most important piece is the power supply: we need to ensure it can handle the juice the computer requires. You can get a 750 watt PSU for £24.96.

Another way to look at it is if it goes wrong after a year you can replace it for £25 where as if a console goes wrong you generally have to buy a new one or pay ridiculous repair costs.

Aside from the cheap PSU, the person who wrote that is correct, it is cheaper, it might cost more at first then a console, but in the long run it's cheaper.

Re: PC gaming is cheaper then Console gaming(according to IGN)

Look at all the cheap deals you get these days on steam, and other similar services. I must have at least 5 top games I haven't got around to playing yet, and I haven't been spending £30 a time on them that's for sure.

Plus, when the odd AAA title comes out, you still get a bargain! BF3 for £23 etc. The bargains are there to be had.

And of course the hardware is more expensive at the start but a PC can still do more then a console. That's fo r sure.

I'm not sure if it's 'cheaper' but it's certainly better value in my eyes

He is also making assumptions with the price of games.

One of the things about PC games is all the great free mods. Consoles don't have those!

But consoles do have a second hand market for their games more than PC ones do.

Most PSU failures I see take out everything - it's extremely expensive and a lot of inconvenience.

I'd also worry they might torch my house and kill my children.

    Other than that, good plan.

Re: PC gaming is cheaper then Console gaming(according to IGN)

Well the price of the games is certainly cheaper, but the price of upgrades to keep up with the latest games is obviously gonna be expensive.

Then again to play at PS3 or Xbox 360 visual level a super PC isn't necessary, but full HD 1080p, High detailed, FSAA'ed heaven awaits for those who speculate a little bit.

So you have got to buy lots of PC games to make the investment pay off.....that's what I'll tell the missus, I have to buy more games to make up for the £200 spent on a new graphics card and the £40 ram upgrade, I'm sure she'd buy it...................honest!

Re: PC gaming is cheaper then Console gaming(according to IGN)

Hasn't this always been the case? The way I like to argue it is that everybody has a PC anyway, so why not spend a bit more and have a gaming PC instead of a console? Just put the money you would normally put towards a console towards a graphics card and anticipate the savings you will be making from PC games always being cheaper than console games and that's not even including epic sales yet. There are a lot more reasons but that is probably the most basic one.

Re: PC gaming is cheaper then Console gaming(according to IGN)

i think the simple thing is that a PC is not just a games machine which for some reason the majority forget about this?.

Lets go about the games at the minute, games for pc can vary alot but generally its £15 - £25, there are some games that hold their value insanely well, looking at Starcraft 2 here as it still hovers over the £30 mark (i got mine preordered at £22). However the general console game, if you arent looking around costs £35 - £45 (sometimes even £55 instore! I remember paying that once... ).

Thats a reasonable difference really, and the cost of hardware is the major downfall of the PC however, i think this is over exaggerated, for me personally i upgrade ever 3 - 4 years on the system, gpu is whenever i feel i need to.

I bought an intel rig when the penryn first came out (preordered), the system as a whole cost me ~£540, that was :
    e8400
    asus p5n-d(also preordered)
    4gb crucial ddr2
    xclio 700w
    coolermaster cm690
    western digital 640AAKS
    512mb 8800GTS
    DVD drive

Now that system was only recently replaced by an i5 system, it lasted 4 years and infact its still being used as a lan pc. The 8800GTS was sold to a mate a few years back as i had won a 9800GTX(not much difference), i then sidestepped to an ati 4850(£10 upgrade...) as it was more energy efficient (parents paid bills, money was tight) then i sold that and paid an extra £35 to get a gtx460 when they were new (i had moved to a 23" dell monitor, needed more power).

my new i5 system upgrade/replacement cost me £323 which was:
    i5 2500k
    asus p8z68-v
    8gb ddr3(2x4)
    thermaltake toughpower 675W

so in 4 years it really has cost me around £350 (including gpu upgrades) to have an extremely quick system to date, it would have cost me less if I sold my older pc but im using it as a lan pc with a passive 9800GT . The new i5 system has carried over the 460 as theres no need for a new gpu, im personally a graphics whore and i like running ultra and BF3 is the only game i cant manage that with which is why a gpu upgrade is on the table however i will patiently wait till next year (unless this gpu generation is epic...).

If i wanted to run console graphic quality games then my lan pc would be fine as my main desktop, it handles everything flawlessly. People forget you dont need to run pc games at max, running bf3 at medium is already better than consoles!...

Now my friend has had 3 xbox 360s since release and has spent more than i have on my PC and alot more on games, not to mention the live subscription (as small as it is!). On top of this my pc is used for all my programing, video entertainment streaming and playing along with being the method of browsing the web.

Seriously when you look at it, console gaming is on par in cost but the pc has mods and is a much more versatile unit!.

Re: PC gaming is cheaper then Console gaming(according to IGN)

In terms of performance, timing is key as well.

There is no chance that taking a build both priced at the 360's launch price or a top end rig from 2005 will play games at the same performance as a 360.

OTOH: money spent on peripherals for consoles, I'm thinking Live subscription, could equate to an upgrade ever year. Its swings and roundabouts for the most part, although being a self-builder I'm inclined to lean towards the PC.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

It's an awful article. I remember seeing it a while back and not giving it much of my thought time.

Invest sensibly and a pc build and it will last a long time, all about hitting that sweet spot. As mentioned a pc is more than just for games and you have to factor in that you probably would have a pc anyway, albeit a much cheaper one.

I haven't paid more than £15 for a long time!

My pc build was initially built in 2006 before i started uni, although it now shares little in common with it as I upgraded a bunch of stuff to keep it going for another year or 2.

Consoles completely destroy pcs when it comes to multiplayer gaming socially, as in with people in the room with you. Tekken, pro-evo etc. It just doesn't exist properly for pcs!

That's mostly still true for the Wii but with the advent of online multiplayer on consoles, local splitscreen multiplayer has been going back rapidly. There was a time when every FPS game for consoles had splitscreen but that is no longer the case unfortunately. All fighters still do, yea, but those only have space for two people at a time with the exception of Super Smash Bros., not four like FPS games do.

ooh.. you've not done a good LAN session with your mates on multiple PC's then? It's awesome.

In fact.. it's so good as to be worth a whole weekend

Re: PC gaming is cheaper then Console gaming(according to IGN)

FPS's aren't really that sociable, yes the fighting games are a good example of more social games, but there's also a lot of others, all the rock band type games and the party game thing (basically a bunch of mini games)

Although these days there's nothing stopping you plugging a big TV and multiple controllers into a pc.

A Lan is a great way for social pc gaming however it's not something that can be done impromptu like a console.

The idea that an El-cheapo PSU is going to last 3 years in a gaming rig and more to the point that you need 750w in that rig speaks volumes.
It's also question the decision of spending £55 on a single 8gb stick of 1333mhz ram, currently they sell 2x4GB Mushkin Blackline 1600mhz ram for £35, saying this was in November is no excuse as I can tell you 2x4gb of 1600mhz could be got for around £40 then.
They've also gone for the cheapest nForce 630a chipset motherboard, way to cripple the HT
