Far Cry: Instincts E3 2004 Preview
Platform: PS2, Xbox
Publisher: Ubi Soft
Developer: Ubi Soft Montreal
With the success Ubisoft has found lately in porting its Clancy games from the PC to consoles, it's no shock that they'd give their latest chart-topper, Far Cry, the console treatment. Far Cry: Instincts looks to deliver the same free-roaming style of gameplay we saw on the PC, but with a tweaked plot, some new vehicles and weapons, and other console-specific features.
Instincts takes place on what looks to be largely the same island used for the PC version, but now you'll have vehicles like ATVs and Jet Skis for exploring it. A few new moves, like the ability to crawl underneath an overhang, flip onto your back, and shoot directly upward, will mean some subtle additions to how you play the game. Plus, 16 players for the game's many online modes via Xbox Live should be a blast.
Potentially, the biggest feature is the included map editor. Unlike the other simplistic editors we've seen on consoles before, this one gives you full abilities to raise and lower terrain, as well as drop in vegetation, buildings, vehicles, or other objects as you see fit. While you're editing, you can pull the left trigger and instantly jump into your map, do a little exploration from a first-person view, ride some vehicles around, and then jump back to edit mode for more tweaks. And, best of all, you'll be able to upload and download maps via Xbox Live, meaning all the user-created content can be easily shared.
The folks at Ubisoft Montreal are currently working hard to get this one out on store shelves by the end of the year.
