    Cloud game file storage question

    Hi all

Quick question I can't find a simple answer to so far - if I want to move game files to cloud storage (say Skydrive), what is the correct way to go about it to cause least problems?

Eg, if I move every folder & file associated with an installed game off my pc, but do not uninstall it, do I simply move everything back if I want to play the game in the future - & am I set to go (bar any patching)? Or is there any more to it than that.

    Thanks.

Re: Cloud game file storage question

There is no easy answer really, other then "don't use systems like skydrive to back up game saves to the cloud"

Steam games auto sync to the steam cloud - no point doing anything special for them.
Origin games CAN be synced to the cloud, IF your lucky.....
GFWL titles are a serious PITA to fully backup, let alone sync to cloud and then restore at a later date

What I tend to do is just regularly backup "My Documents" - most games will save their games in there somewhere and un-installing the games generally does not delete the save files.

Re: Cloud game file storage question

Cloud saves can be a bit of a chew on.

I lost my AvP save and it was on Steam cloud, installed Steam on my older machine and it synced the cloud when I logged on. Went back to my main machine and my save had completely vanished.

I would say backup what you can onto Physical media. Maybe use 2 rewritable DVDs so then they can be wiped and used again. Use one a certain week and the other the following week

    Thanks.

Backing-up onto physical media it is then.

What if I wish to move the files off without leaving copies on my hard drive? (Assuming these would be games I'm not currently playing and part of the reason for moving it/them is space).

Re: Cloud game file storage question

Honestly, depends which game. With virtually all of them, it's possible to remove the files and re-add them later and carry on as if nothing happened, but where the file actually is... that's easier said than done. This covers the main ones: http://savelocations.wikia.com/wiki/...Locations_Wiki. And there's no guarantee that it will actually work. I've had a few past that should have worked, but when the file was transferred over it was either deleted, or the game just plain refused to see it.

I would personally be googling each game individually to check whether other people have had it work or not. I've done it a lot over the years transferring files from one PC to another, Steam cloud, savegames stored on NAS etc, and all sorts of things have gone wrong. I've become fairly used to starting them again.
