    Help with steam please

Today, steam decided, as it does, every few weeks, to ask me to re-log in.

Last week my storage hdd died. I lost my password list.

Steam, being the patheticly stupid program that it is, requires you to give the answer to a secret question, in order to retrive/reset passwords. My answer was in the same file as my password, also lost...

So I cant retrive my password, in an automated fashion.

Ive sent an email, to support@steampowered.com (I think that was the address). Shortly after, two automated replys, for lost passwords arrived, again requiring the secret question answer.

Where should I email for a quick responce?

Steam being crap, as it is, will not let me use the same cd key for another account, so I cannot create another account.

So without them resetting it, it means I have to buy another copy of the game, which I am not doing. Assuming the worst, and they refuse to reset it, can I sue them? (the original hl licence gives you the right to play the game for life, iirc). If I did, it would be just for the sake of it, knowing Id probably lose money, but so would they, over just giving me my password...

Back to secret questions, Secret questions are comleatly pointless and are just annoying. Supopose I chose "what school did I go to?", as I only left school a few years ago, most people that know me in real life, wouldnt have a hard time finding that out...
One would also assume that these people are also the people, that are most likely to be able to access my email account - as opposed to people I dont know.
So my answer, for "what was your pets name?" (note that my only pets were fish, and they died about 12 years ago, I cant remember..), was compleatly random...

Anyway, im bored.... someone suggest a better game for me to get instead, if they dont reset it, I wont be buying hl again!

you can play HL for life right now. put the cd in, run setup.exe. valve's dues to you end there, bar tech support. six years is a bloody long time for a game to continue to be updated.

and you'll be hard-pushed to find a "lost password" system that does not have any authentication on it whatsoever. perhaps next time you enter a secret question you should use an answer that you actually know?

and why can't i give my cd key to a hundred friends to start accounts with that key? it's so unfair

as for other games, try looking at games released in 1999-2004, which you've not looked at

directhex, I think the fact that the password would be sent to my email address is enough? that would be, imo, more than enough authentication. I have done a quick survey, of 15 cs players I play with often, none of them can remember there answer.. but they all, bar one, have the password written down on paper. He will be in same situation as me, when his asks to login.

I am not talking about it being updated. Im talking about the right to play it online. Online being part of the game, and the licence being for life, I have the right to play it online.

You really think I want to give my key to other people? I think it is unfair however that this system means you cant sell the game second hand, once you are bored with it - if youve already used cd key online. Or if your in my situation, with the account being b0rked.
Anyway, why is this needed? under the old WON system, a cd key can only be used by one person at any one time, isnt this enough?

Anyway I would rather see them improving the game, instead of wasting money stoping a few people who wouldnt buy it anyway from playing.
I say few, because they already have things inplace which are adequate, this is just a waste.

farcry and ut2k4 I would like to play. Already compleated farcry (want to again ).
UT2k4 gives me a ****ty error if i try to play it. another waste of £30.

Have you spoke to ATARI "tech support" ?

I rang them to point out that they were selling faulty DVD's (it had copy protection on that stopped it playing in my drive, even though it was 100% legit).
The guys responce was "umm... its a disk, put it in your drive and it'll work".

After calmy explaining that it was the DVD's utter <beep> "protection" that was stoping it from working fine under windows (no problems under linux ), he started to recomend that i scan for viruses . He couldnt grasp what i was talking about so went to put me through to a different "department".
I guess he pressed the wrong button as i was cut off.

don't look at me, that's the support you paid for. remember, tech support makes closed-source better than open

the error isnt fixable... directhex knows all, and he cant fix it...

(the error is ms speech engine trys to install when I try to run it - it asks for speech.msi which afaik doesnt exist).

no reply from steam... i know its a saturday... still annoyed though, even if it is possibly my fault in any way....
