I'm starting to grasp the whole Steam thing now

Courtesy of Ferral wo has been gifting me with a few great titles.... and my lack of time to shop.. I'm starting to grasp Steam.

And.... I now see that (having re build Sair a new rig) downloading all your games from an online source is... pretty smart.

it's all starting to make sense at last... only taken me a few YEARS to see it.

(try Sol Survivor people... it's brillant)

Re: I'm starting to grasp the whole Steam thing now

I've always found steam to be great, being able to back the game files up then install them to any of my systems on my network saves messing round with disks, codes ect
Someone left a note on a piece of cake in the fridge that said, "Do not eat!". I ate the cake and left a note saying, "Yuck, who the hell eats paper ?

I got Steam day one when it was launched, I hated it, I thought why do I need this 'extra' software installed to play Counterstrike, fast forward a few years and now I wouldn't like to be without it

Re: I'm starting to grasp the whole Steam thing now

if i need to format i move the steam folder to a backup drive, reinstall, install steam then copy the backup folder straight over the top.

verify each install to be safe and 200gb of games all restored within an hour.

It's not just Steam, but GOG and I assume all the other digital distributors as well. Sure is convenient. I certainly don't miss owning physical copies of games.

Steam seem to do a pretty good job of DD, compared to services like Origin for example.

I have never used Origin, and won't bother to in the foreseeable future. What's it doing that makes it so awful?

Oh Zakky.....you're yet to have the fun of the Steam sales.

I warn you now, Valve are the masters at it. Your collection is going to get very big within the next year or so

I felt like you at first when I first brought Half Life 2 the Orange Pack for CSS, having to use Steam, I didn't like at first but I soon forgot that my doubts and loved it. Steam is the best thing that has ever come to gaming.

My only two worries is that if you ever get into trouble with Steam, you lose access to all your games which I don't think is right.

Don't get me started on Steam sales. I went through my last year's worth of bank statements recently and found I'd spent approx £600 on Steam. I've not played most of the games either. Thankfully that gave me a big enough kick that I'll be holding off the frivolous purchases from now o... Ooh shiny cheap daily deal!

Re: I'm starting to grasp the whole Steam thing now

Another thumbs up to Ferral, know's I am into my indie gaming and has sent keys for quite a few games and steam vouchers from the winter sales so I have been blasting through them.

Surprised you haven't gone with Steam earlier Zak, it is a godsend at times. Only downside is when you have over 700GB of games on there, you rebuild only to find the steam folder backup has gone belly up and you have to download them all again. Even on a 60mb line it takes a while to get them all xD

Currently playing Hack Slash Loot from Ferral, awesome little rogue like game

My main addiction right now is still The Binding of Isaac, roll on the expansion at the end of April.

Bagnaj: I know what you mean with the steam sales. I tend to get around 10+ titles per sale and wait out for the cheap prices. At which point I have a mass of games that are still there unplayed from October sales of 2011 xD I'll get around to them one day.

True, but I can keep telling myself that Although these days I tend to play on the DS/3DS more often than not and my PC gaming has tailed off into more indie gaming due to the better variety in game play and idea's instead of the usual rehash of same old games from the big publishers etc.

Apologies for what looks like an edit to your email Matt, half paying attention whilst working and put my reply in your post xD Sorted now.

shocking I know.... and I'm still wound up that my CoD game in a box on a disc had nothing on it but a steam link... but the downloading of games and the principle of them all being safe is genius.

there is NO WAY I woulsd have played or even considered Sol Survivor but it's really excellent fun, and challenging but do able.. with great sound. And King Arthur is a challenge and a half on the tactical front but worthy too
