What do you think makes the best RPG?

I dont recall this topic actually being discussed and thought it was an interesting topic to get our points across, personally for me a great RPG contains the following:

    1. Storyline (unless its an ARPG i dont really care, skip to point 2)
    2. Mass enemies/mobs
    3. Varying difficulty, areas level up as you level up but only so far and if you push on very early you should be rewarded (not penalised, like getting 5xp instead of 1000xp because its 10 levels higher)
    4. Challenging Quests, requiring you do actually look for items (explore) or carry certain things, kill quests are good but i like a mix of everything not just mass kill this then this etc
    6. Crafting, making weapons armour and potions all the works, I like searching for materials and making the ultimate gear. It would be nice to incorporate this into some quests as well
    7. Huge landscapes, i love exploring so i really prefer more dynamic/different areas and not just straight up duplicates (filler areas).
    8. Skills that involve AOE and everything else, the game must have a spell caster class... Diablo 2 was the best IMO with the sorc using blizzard it just felt brilliant and higher levels
    9. Graphics, i would rate graphics much higher than in this list as its a killer for getting you into a game, like Diablo 2 i would never play it now if it wasnt for me playing it many moons ago when those graphics were solid so i got into it. Great looking landscapes and skills along with your character really can help enjoy the game.
    10. Being able to do 'runs' to level up, i like facing an epic challenge and i somehow get enjoyment out of repeating the area to get to a level where i can fight the next boss, like Diablo when doing tomb runs, that also means for me the levels must work that they all respawn when you rejoin .(im probably alone on this point ).
    11. CO-OP, i believe this adds endless hours of gameplay but this is really for the ARPG genre but if you have games like dragon age i believe it would fit it, however games like the witcher it wouldnt.
    12. Singleplayer - Offline, is how it should be, multiplayer is obviously online and i would like a LAN option as that is great at events/lan parties .

    How would your list differ?

The Poll is simply the main thing, i.e the top of your list but then please elaborate with whatever you want in a post , maybe something like a list .

(PS: Eventually your ideas may be used for a future project developed in 2020... ).

For me it's the World/Setting although this is bound into the story, it's not in itself story/quests.

Re: What do you think makes the best RPG?

There's no single answer, as I like a range of different games rather than having one game tick all the boxes - sometimes I want one thing, another time I'll feel different and want something else. I enjoy Diablo 3 as well as Skyrim!

But *most* of the time I would be looking for 'immersion in a different life'. That's hard to tie up with any of your poll options, but it most closely relates to world building/portrayal, which isn't an option either but should be Ie, having a virtual world that's large, consistent with a fantasy setting in terms of coherent history and lore, is fully interactive, has time/weather systems, NPC scheduling. And there's a place for your character within that world, not just on top of it, so allowing the player to genuinely feel like they're living a life in part of that world.

Best example I can think of is Ultima 7 - from the world building, interactivity, NPC scheduling, player jobs etc.

But it also relies on things like graphics etc. because while you can have the largest text adventure in history, it just isn't that immersive (well, it can be, but it's hard).

I dont mind idea of random skirmishes you can avoid or even watch, for me I like the idea of unpredictability .

For example , weather changing a or forcing you to find shelter , or that attracts / reveals new locations or NPCS ( something i rarely see with magic in games )
Someone following or stalking you so your not just alone on a lone road..
Situations that would allow a low lvl character to do something extraordinary and lvl up far quicker that require quick thinking, diplomacy , strategy etc ( not just magic or brute force ) or gain something unique
Custom weapons or spells - working out what ingredients to get what
NPCS who can betray you or reveal your location to enemies without you knowing
Gods / Alignments that require you to do more than just kill other alignments i.e, convert others , heal enemies , gain followers and can reward or punish you on a whim too , or decide your their chosen one.

How do you bargain with a god ? what are the consequences ? ( Same thing with guilds other groups )
Creating new characters through families and being able to play your son etc and likewise facing the offspring of old family foes.
I like the idea too of simply having character cursed or supernatural looking to reverse it or restore himself in some way ie. imagine how important the weather is to vampires or werewolves, or perhaps locations / people / events to a ghost
Imagine you we a werewolf and were also part of a guild who hunted them , or had son in a guild who did etc
What happens if you had a son you killed you didnt know , who happened to have the same preference of sexuality as your god , could you hide him somehow , get a new disguise, or strike a deal with the devil ?

For me it's usually the story that drives me to keep on playing.

Usually it's the control or camera that ticks me off.

For me I find a juicy backstory and a full to the brim environment are a must. It keeps me immersed in the games mythos and just makes me want to explore every nook and cranny to find new backstory/ weaponry.
