Wing Commander was out before i left the womb so i don't really have any idea what it's about (an adults' Rogue Squadron?), but i've read enough about it to know its worth i sign up.
The website and golden ticket is all very excitable - i just hope the end product isn't something akin to the end of a Peter Molyneux hype train.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
Thanks for that. I didn't feel old enough already
I forgot newer generations never experienced the space combat sim. Rogue Squadron is not a million miles off I guess, but Wing Commander is rather more immersive and story based - your 'life' as a pilot on the carrier is a main part of the story. I'd guess that story-wise they're actually a bit more analogous to the Mass Effect games in the focus on characters etc.so i don't really have any idea what it's about (an adults' Rogue Squadron?)

I really liked strike commander as well.

Nope
Tried again with different username and email address and that hasn't arrived either.
Just downloaded this to tide me over:

This download is valid and worked

WC2 was the first pc game I ever bought with my birthday money.
Things I loved about that game, your cockpit was your cockpit, every light and button on there had a purpose not just for show, you even saw a hand on the joystick that matched the movements of your ship.
As ship took damage the cockpit would reflect it, nothing reflected the damage you'd taken better than large cracks appearing in the canopy and chunks of your control panel blowing up or shorting.
Then you had to lovely landing sequence where you'd see you ship all scared up with damage, I still remember one mission where I limped back after getting really badly shot up, hopeing I could get back safely (my engines had been badly damaged so kept cutting out) just so I could see how bad the damage looked if I could land it safely.
It also had a great story not only as to what was happening in the war in general but also what was going on between the different crew members, great to look forward not just to another mission but for the next poker game cut scene.
And I still love that cartoon style vga graphics, I actually found the later ones where they replaced it with real actors in actual video cut scenes where just not as good and actually put me off the series.
I still think that starlancer (despite it's cheese plot) and freelancer despite it's galaxy issues (some zones packed with too much stuff others too empty, lots to explore but nothing to find half the time) are still two of the best space games.
I think I'd rate freespace 1&2 slightly higher as a missions based space game above the WC series and starlancer, overall world and story area good but the game mechanics where better. (not perfect but generally I prefer them to the WC series and starlancer)
Iwar2 still has the best flight mechanics of any space game I've played, a far more complex flight mechanic than most space games but not so real that it's still fun (unlike say elite2 which while very realistic, it was just too realistic so not much fun to play) good story and galaxy too, just let down by a really bad pirate mechanic (no tradeing in that game) and a world that really suffered from so many places to go but no reason to go there.
Edit:I've just looked at a video of wing commander saga it's the freespace2 engine, ok could be the opengl freespace engine someone made
edit2: yep it's the opensource freespace engine

Pob's new mod, Soviet Pob Propaganda style Laptop.
"Are you suggesting that I can't punch an entire dimension into submission?" - Flying squirrel - The Red Panda Adventures
Sorry photobucket links broken
Agree with all of that pob - WC2 was my favourite of the series as well, and probably the first time a computer game had made me care about what happened to the other characters, bizarre(and Sparks.. phoar)
I also have fond memories of the wing commander series, I even remember Mark Hamil (aka Luke Skywalker) in wing commander 4 or 5I also wonder which came first Khajiit from (Elder scrolls series) or Kilrathi (from wing commander)
But the very best thing to come out of the wing commander series was the "privateer" spin off games. Privteer 2 was star studded with actors Christopher Walken and Brian Blessed to name just a few.
The Armada series was also an amazing resource / strategy game.
I miss these games !!
