    Great Game Openings

I'm not on about that cut scene or movie that appears at the start or those dodgy training missions, but when you first get control in game. When you finally get to play for the first time, what are the most memorable openings to a game?

    My favourites:

Command & Conquer The classic C&C music kicks off, the rocket boat lets out a woosh and next thing a large BAAOOOMM, and your men are storming the beach. Had a real 'Yeah, lets get it on" feel.

Doom The original opening, soon as you pile through that door shooting and blow those oil drums up, music blaring and grunts dying in droves. By the end of the first level with the shotgun you is ready for more!

Thief: The Dark Project Do it properly, and the first guard you knock out is a accompanied by the sound of a piano rising (Crap description I know), making you so tense. The rest of the 1st level keeps that feeling and you finish it with your nerves shot!

I'm a fan of the Half Life intro, the train ride etc really helps set the mood of the whole Black Mesa complex.

I can probably think of a better one, but it would take a while

Hl intro was good but Zedmeister was talking about when you first get control.

Most of the games I've played the first time you get control is pretty slow going. Doom was good. I found FarCry fairly good also. As the action fairly quickly hotted up and the graphics were awe inspiring.

Loved the D3 intro, for a split second I thought the game intro was FMV, then I realised it was the game. Top stuff

Yeah, the bit where it pans away from the screen impressed me alot

Erm, lets see.... tis a tough question. I'd probably say Another world on the megadrive. The intro was good but the way it just chucked you in the deep end (literally) was great. Clichéd I know, but it really was another world, everything was new and eeiry especially with that beast thing following you in the background.

What else... probably Shenmue on the Dreamcast. Again it set the story nicely, but left you with very little idea as to what was going on, you wandered round and did it all yourself. I dunno what it was about that game but there was something special there, without even mentioning the graphics.
