    Xcom

new xcom game, not the FPS, but the trun based strategy game developed by Firaxis, it's out in under a week now.
There is a demo but it's just the scripted tutorial mission and one short mission
    http://store.steampowered.com/app/200510/

Still time to get the pre order bonus pack, although I think the free copy of civ5 is about the only reason I would.

Must admit I'm still on the fense over this, I love the old ones, I still have the floppies and manuals , it's a great game to play on my netbook and it runs off a memory stick with ease.

There's a few live stream video's out there that give a better idea of the game than the demo does, but as much as the developers are saying "it's hard" I'm not sure it is esp compaired to the originals, they are hard on easy, my reason is very simple, you're limited to a maximum of 6 people in a squad, back in the original you'd rarely take less than 8 in a team and easily lose 2-4 people on a good mission.

I'm not sure I like the class system and special abilities.

    Still it's a trun based strategy xcom game . . . :

I will be pointing my better half in the direction of the demo, given how much of a fan of the original xcom games she is

    Re: Xcom

Email from GMG turned up this morning, key activated, game downloading. I'm not sure if it's going to be unlocked on the 9th or 12th though. UK release is the 12th but steam have started preloading from the 6th.

It does look as if they've oversimplified the personnel and base management from what little I've seen in videos.

Disappointed that many of the game trailers just show action cinematics; it's as if it's a different type of game.

RockPaperShotgun did a good piece on the demo which I agreed with. The gist is the demo is far to small to almost be pointless.

Also got it on order, in a unlikely move for myself got it from GMG since its 25% off at the moment, normally prefer a boxed copy.

    Re: Xcom

Not usually a turn based gaming kind of guy, but remember the fanfare the original got, and now wanting to try this out. As above, will probably get it from greenmangaming.com but just wondering, do you buy a key and redeem it on steam - ie. I can preload it - or do they send out a disc with the contents and just need to activate it when it arrives? I have probably missed some info somewhere, but just getting the demo now, and for £21, worth a shot really.

EDIT - Yep I am thick - its on PC Downloads. Might just go ahead and do it now then...

If downloaded from them, will a totally separate download? Or does it go into my Steam account for future prosperity?

The key it gives you can be entered directly into steam through the games/activate a game link on the top of steam. The title itself is steam works so can only be downloaded through steam

Brilliant. I quite like the idea of having my library on steam. Might have to give it a buy tonight then... I've only played a little of the steam demo but think it's something I'd like. Civ 5 for free also helps...

EDIT. Played the demo a little more. Liked it. Bought it. Downloading now

    Re: Xcom

It crashes like a noob on an icy race track, but the gameplay's OK when it runs. I was never the big XCOM fan in the house, but the wife's bought it (tempted by the free copy of Civ V that came with it!). It's definitely simplified from the original, but from what I've seen of her playing it's got a similar feel, and she's definitely warming to it.

Shame it's buggy as hell at the minute though - Steam forums are full of threads about random crashes, with no apparent pattern to them. No doubt there will be updates to improve matters though...

I'm probably going to jinx myself by saying this, but I've put a fair few hours in over the weekend and haven't experienced any bugs or crashes. I might head on over to the steam forums to see when it happens in case its later in the game or something.

I have to say that I love it. A lot. At the start, with the base management and research, I felt you got a little bit bombarded and that you aren't necessarily made aware of implications etc. Always short of money, but slowly getting more and more satellites up so that's helping with money and panic levels.

In terms of the actual turn based levels, I find it fantastic. I'm now a mega-strategy game lover, nor have I played the original, but I'm finding the level of tactical play/strategy just right, without being too granular. Had real problems as when I only had a few decent units at the start, and then they got wounded (and hence unavailable for x days) I was left with grunts only... Managed to get through that, build up a good roster of people and now have quite a few Colonels to play with.

Dont know about others, but I love that way that you get attached to your squad, and losing a decorated person is always a little sad, reminds me a lot of Cannon Fodder in that sense. What squad mix are people going with. I've now got 2 high ranked snipers, 2 heavies, an assault and then a support person for field medic purposes. I'd mainly ignored the stun tool for ages, but now cottoning on that its great to capture alien weapons which saves plenty of money.

Enough of my babble - Hope that there are others here enjoying it. Just playing it on normal, but loving it at the moment.

    Re: Xcom

Wotcher. Scaryjim's wife here, since he seems to be answering on my behalf. So far:
Very crashy - similar to the old one in that if you have an attack event and a base event occurring simultaneously it has a fit and falls over - I had to let a large UFO go just to get past a recurring one because my foundry was coming online as the chase began!
Loss of time units is a blow - only having up to 2 moves (and then only if you don't shoot first) is limiting tactically
There is somewhat of a feel of the original about it, but it is much more linear - "dumbed down" is one way to put it - this doesn't stop it being fun, but it is a bit frustrating if you're a vet of the originals.
The doctor doing research scares me - I'm pretty sure she's going to turn evil at some point!
