Can Windows 8 Tablet be the future of PC gaming or end of console gaming??

    Hi all.

Have you guys checked out the new windows table coming out soon?

    http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en/us/default.aspx

These come with fully fledged windows 8 OS allowing you to play some of your steam and origin games on the move.

And at home can potentially be connected to your hdTV for some fully fledge PC gaming at home.

For me, the real danger is not PC gaming, its console gaming. This could potentially harm console gaming more then pc gaming(technically these tablets will run pc games, some of them anyway).

I see many benefits of using a windows tablet then a console my self. i can play on my HDTV fine, take it with me and play on the way to work and take it to my mates house or abroad etc without a hassle of carrying loads of cables that a console has and the bulk and weight a console has.

    What u think lads?

Some of these tablets will have i7's!!! Yes we may not be able to play 1080p ultra high settings but these should play the latest games at medium quality which lets face it, medium quality looks better then what the current consoles come out.

Look at the ipad, the ipad can sport graphics and gameplay thats nearly on par with todays consoles.

Trouble is the controls, games are going to have to be designed around touch. And are AAA games really going to go that way for the sake of a few people with tablets or is it going to be left to indie devs and specialist mobile game companies, and the odd cutdown game from a big publisher like it is with android/iphone at the mo.

"I see many benefits of using a windows tablet then a console my self. i can play on my HDTV fine, take it with me and play on the way to work and take it to my mates house or abroad etc without a hassle of carrying loads of cables that a console has and the bulk and weight a console has."
Reading that it sounds like you are going to be using it at locations, rather than on the way to locations, so why not a gaming laptop? I can't see an i7 tablet coming with discrete graphics, and we all know how poo intel integrated is.

I think you're missing the point that it uses Windows 8 Desktop OS. So you're not playing app store, mobile games, you're playing Skyrim, Assassins Creed 3, World of Warcraft, etc.

There are already loads of tech demo's of people playing Skyrim on High settings on some of these new tablets.

Combined with a keyboard and mouse, that very easily attach, you have the entire "Gaming Laptop" experience, but in a much more transportable package.

I re-iterate. These are not for "mobile games" (read angry birds, etc.), but are capable of playing any game you do on your behemoth gaming rig in your study at home. In exactly the same way you do at home in your study. You install it, you run it, you enjoy playing it.

    No no no no no.

    This is Surface RT.

Surface RT runs Windows 8 RT, and is powered by an ARM processor.

Surface RT will ONLY run apps from the Windows app store. There is no desktop mode. You cannot run any of your apps for Windows 7 or below. You cannot run Steam - and this is even if a version of those for Windows/ARM existed, which is doesn't.

Surface Pro, which has a real Intel CPU, will cost four figures when it ships in 2013.

Surface RT is for Angry Birds grade games only. You cannot put real games on the Windows app store.

You might, but anything costing more than an iPad isn't competing with it - it's competing with the Macbook Air and similar Ultrabooks.

Surface Pro will be a preserve of the rich, and Surface RT will do nothing to gaming that the iPad didn't already do.

Re: Can Windows 8 Tablet be the future of PC gaming or end of console gaming??

The iPad is the best tablet for gaming as a large percentage of the SOC used is dedicated to graphics. However, the SOCs which have the Adreno 320 look like they will compete well.

The major advantages of a Windows based tablet would be to have Office IMHO. A decent mobile version of Word,Excel and Powerpoint will be very useful IMHO.

Aside from puzzly type games tablets really suck for gaming - controlling them is horrible.

The pro (with keyboard) could replace both my iPad 3 and my laptop - for around the same price. I wouldn't expect the pro to cost four figures.

It will be getting there. The price people are suggesting would be an atom/and C-XX kind of x86 price, not a decent i series.

They use ULV Core i7 CPUs which are basically desktop Core i3 CPUs with Turbo Boost. The HD4000 IGP is also gimped too, with the IGP running at nearly half the base clockspeed of the desktop and laptop HD4000 derivatives.

    Edit!!

A convertable Windows 8 Ultrabook with a ULV Core i3 is on pre-order for around £900:

Pure speculation on the price. I heard it would be closer to double that of the RT, if not a little less, which is far from four figures.

    Time will tell though.
