Is new hardware really worth it?

According to hardocp's article on doom3 performance, an Athlon 64 FX-53 based system will get this performance graph with a 6800GT...

... whilst an Athlon XP 3200+ will get this:

Surely that would make it pointless upgrading? What do you all think?

But thats just one setting on one game. At 16x12 with 8xAF its bound to be the video card thats the bottleneck not the CPU and the scores should be pretty close. IF you want to find out the difference the CPU makes you have to look at the lower resolution benchmarks. If you look at these benchmakrs on Anandtech the CPU clearly makes a difference.

Having just upgraded from a 3000+ to an Athlon64 3500+ I can tell you it certainly isnt pointless. Expensive and stupid, yes, but thats me

if you're jumping from a 3200+ to an FX53 then i would say yes, it is completely pointless upgrading, and you have more money than sense. can i borrow £20?

although if you're upgrading from something a little further back in evolution then yes, it probably would be worth it(although not for an FX53, a 3500 or 3800 is much better value).

No, I don't believe that at all TheBuZZard, real world benchmarks involve what hardocp have done there with IQ settings and resolutions, I pity those that run games on a resolution of 1024x768 or lower, it's just ugly, and I have high standards.

Although it can be said that these benchmarks just show how GPU dependant this particular game is, perhaps the speed of the FX-53 is therefore holding the 6800GT back? Perhaps with faster kit in the future it will continue to improve in performance? All I can say for sure is that I am happy to stay on my 2.3GHz Barton based system for a while yet, until AMD release something really worth upgrading to.

(Although that will probably be something with a 5000+ PR flag.)
