Best of the Best Action RPG's

Okay, I've been playing Gothic 2 and enjoying it thoroughly. Prior to that I got lost in the world of Morrowind. I enjoy these types of RPG over and above the overhead view, and team-based RPG's. I was wondering what you fine people have enjoyed, and if you have any recommendations for RPG's?

I suppose I shouild be honest and say I haven't actually played a team-based RPG since my Amiga days!

Got to say I'm the opposite. I started playing Gothic 2. It had loads of promise. Then the characters started talking, and completely destroyed the atmosphere with their quasi-American emotionless drone. It's stupid but little things like that can spoil a game for me, especially an RPG, where I think atmosphere is everything.

If you like things like Morrowind and Gothic then I guess you're the kind of person who likes to explore? Have you ever tried playing any MMORPGs? There's a lot of trash out there but some people find a huge amount to do in them.

Ever played Knights of the Old Republic?

Aside from that the best RPGs I've played have been NWN, Planescape: Torment, and Baldur's Gate 2. But they're all 'ovehead' (isometric is the term you're looking for ).

I think a few other people have mentioned Dungeon Siege as a good action RPG.

MMORPG's - don't have a decent, or dedicated, net connection. Plus I hear that some of the better ones have subscription fees. That's demanding a little too much for my gaming needs.

Heard that KOTOR was good, but is it?

How about the Morrowind expansions? Last time I played was on the Xbox.

KotOR is really good for most, and I wouldn't let the team-based play put you off. If you haven't played a team-based RPG since the Amiga, you've been missing out! Bioware have released some really great games since then. Having said that, if you're not too interested in the story, or dislike turn-based yet real-time fights, you'd struggle to find it fun, unless you're a big Star Wars fan.

Speaking of Morrowind expansions, you should check out the "Middle Earth" TC for it at www.memod.co.uk, if you're interested in LotR. They're attempting to completely recreate the world of the books, and judging from their website seem to be doing a fair job so far.

I love Diablo but am I right in thinking that it only supports 800 x 600 resolution? Or has someone released a hack yet to up that? I can't play it otherwise because my TFT uses a native res of 1280 x 1024

KotOR is good. Maybe not as good as some people say. But I enjoyed it. It's certainly not as deep as some RPGs, and while you do get a reasonable level of character customisation, it's nothing immense - but then what do you expect? The game is designed to play on the Xbox. On the plus side, it has good graphics, great voice acting/characters, a decent story, and there's a decent balance between dialogue and action.

I'm not a Star Wars fan but I thoroughly enjoyed waving my light saber in people's faces It's definitely worth a play, if only because it's a change from the usual RPG setting. The last year or so has been pretty poor for RPGs IMO, and KotOR stands out as one of the few worth playing.

Morrowind is still one of the best games I've ever played. The game is huuuge, I've had it since Christmas and still haven't touched the main quest. Great fun, and I got for only £18, along with the two expansion packs. Bargain.

Also playing Dungeon Siege, which is good fun as well, but doesn't have so many RPG elements as other games. The hack'n'slash can get a bit repetitive, but it's still good fun.

Sorry to go off topic: I'd also like to know how to run diablo 2 at a higher resolution. Can anyone help?

Oh god, where to start. Bloodmoon - the fact the main mission encourages you to become a werewolf and the dream sequences are brilliant. Also the magic items and quests you get in tribunal are massive. Both these expansions add massive amounts of gameplay onto morrowind (Loved bloodmoon as you can probably tell!)

Oh and mike_w - one for you. Do you know about the bloodmoon easter egg that allows you to view all the cutscenes????

Right, on Soulsthein (The island in bloodmoon) go to the the Skaal Village and enter the Mead Hall. There you will see the giant cliff racer hanging from the ceiling, go look in its eye (Or mouth can't remember). In there, there should be a ring which, when worn, will bring up a menu allowing you to view all bloodmoon - et volla!!

And if you need anything else - like where to get a full suit of Daedric Armour (And the 3 daedric helms) - just ask!
