Talking Competiton - Win one of 6 Steam Games

For this competition I am giving away 6 Steam Games to our forum users

    Drakensang : The Dark Eye
Patrician 4 with Rise of a Dynasty DLC
    Blood Bowl Legendary Edition
    Karateka
    Blades of Time
    Slam Bolt Scrappers

Only thing I ask to enter is that you are an active forum member with at least 50 posts.

    How to enter :

To enter I want you to post a link to a video of your favorite game from the 8Bit era so you are looking at Apple 2, C64, Spectrum, Amstard CPC464, BBC Micro, Electron and so on. If you find the game online, quite few are available to play in Java then post the link up to that also so others can play.

Then let me know why it is your favorite game from that era. It doesn't have to be war and peace (It can be though if you are passionate about a game).

For example my favorite game is Last Ninja 2 on C64 because it has amazing music, no fiddly jumping bits like the first game, the setting is awesome and it looks stunning. I played through it so many times during the 80's and still have my copy fully working on tape to this day, still play it I might add and went through it around 2 weeks ago.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCNMcUzQ3Ws

I will run this competition for 1 week so closing will be 21:00 on Monday 3rd June.

I will then get members from the Mod and Admin squad who don't enter to select the winners from the best entries as to why you love an old game to keep it impartial.

You can select 1 game out of the list to enter and please state it in BOLD in your entry to make it easier to spot!

This competition is not being run by HEXUS, It is being run by me personally (Ferral) and the keys for the games are also being supplied by me, have them all ready to give out

Re: Competiton - Win one of 6 Steam Games

Just be careful with the links - some games (eg Atari arcade classics) are still in copyright/IP is licensed and it wouldn't do for Hexus to be used to link to illegal sites.

Re: Competiton - Win one of 6 Steam Games

Amazingly I never played Elite, however I did play an awful lot of a game and its sequal, Skool Daze and Back to Skool. Quite an intricate little puzzler that often left you extremely frustrated. The first was plagued with bugs, but if anything, they actually increased the charm of the game. Water pistols, stink bombs, mice, rule breaking and risking it all, with the ever real threat of detention, this was probably the first game that opened my eyes as to what was possible!

I couldn't find the game playable online, however it is downloadable at your own peril from the following link.

    http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infos...cgi?id=0000362

For those of you two young to have tried tape driven games, thank yourself lucky that you never had to experiance 10 minutes loading followed by a crashed game. The closest you currently get is downtime when playing MMORPG's, however tape based gaming was increadibly fun!

Re: Competiton - Win one of 6 Steam Games

My most played game was Frontier Elite II on the Atari, my mate and I used to spend all Saturday round his arguing about the best trades, swapping turns playing and generally trying to avoid nuking the planet below us!

The game itself was surprisingly complex, particularly if you turned off the auto pilot and attempted manual maneauvering as it came with a complex set of orbital physics to handle. The gameplay centred around a free form universe where the goal was to earn the biggest and shiniest rewards. Like many modern MMORPG, the gear was the reward to let you earn more gear and so on and this freeform reward system meant you never felt like you had to behave in a certain way.

La-la-la LAAASSERR SQQUUUAD! Ah, the good ol' days

Yeah I never played Rebelstar Raiders but Laser Squad on Amiga was the best tactical wargame of the time IMHO.

Here's some vid from the MSX (!) version: http://youtu.be/_riiysgQyRM

Edit: Just to confirm NOT to enter me for comp, good luck to those that are competing!

Has to be hands down, Buggy Boy on the C64

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7E9DtUlwfaM&sns=em

Never has a cassette tape ( remember those ) brought me so much fun. so many hours spent playing it as a child. The simplistic gameplay, the sounds as you picked up the flags and the only car I have ever known to bounce on 2 wheels when it crashes.

Just watching the youtube video makes me smile. Those where the days.

I would like Drakensang please if I where to be chosen.

    Cheers

Re: Competiton - Win one of 6 Steam Games

I need to know what game you are entering for everyone please, pick one from the list and put it in your post in bold.

If you just want to chat about the classics feel free but please say if you are entering or not.

Surprised no one has actually mentioned the original Karateka yet with the remake being up for grabs!!

    Thanks

In the next few weeks going to be doing my full setup in our spare room, just sorting out at the minute and getting the room ready as it is quite cluttered as is currently used as a storeroom. Going to start a new thread with pics, including the machines, games and everything else, its really my thing now all this true retro gaming, will even go into the emulators and the likes but like I said this will be a few weeks time.

My current systems are Commodore 64c (Revision E board so its 88 or later, this machine has replaced my original C64 Breadbin Model as the CIA chip is on its way out and around £40 to get a modern replacement, will never get rid of my original though even if it goes off completely), Sega Megadrive with MegaCD addon (Both Mark 1), Commodore Amiga 600 (Waiting for Relokick to be delivered at the min as Kick 2 can stop some older games from working (Hillsfar why do you elude me!!! ), basically it forces the machine to soft boot to Kick 1.3 as the rom is on a disk (Hillsfar here I come!!! ) and a few weeks back bought a ZX Spectrum +2A (Black Amstrad model, thankfully have a Konix Speedking joystick which has the additional grey end which works on the Sinclair interface), I have serviced the tape deck and replaced drive belt after giving it a real good clean, looks almost new now.

Think its almost time to start a retro revolution on HEXUS!!!

Cool Re: Competiton - Win one of 6 Steam Games

I never played the original Karateka but the new one is good, clean fun

(Don't expect to learn much about actual Karate tho )

I found Jordan Mechner's story about making the original interesting too; loved how he got his family to run around in their gis while he filmed them, then painstakingly rotoscoped them in (if that's the correct term) by hand....

Re: Competiton - Win one of 6 Steam Games

Seen this yesterday afternoon then got absolutely no work done for the rest of the day trying to make my mind up.

I've decided to go for Dizzy.

Exolon and Dynamite Dan II had made the shortlist but Dizzy is the only one I remember completing as a kid without cheating! May not sound that difficult but this was years before I realised that the Free Acme Bird Seed killed the birds and the Insecticide killed the spiders.

There was one horrible part with a bridge that if you don't jump over the middle it will collapse and you'll be stuck, having to start the game all over. You have to cross it a fair few times and if you miss timed it when you were nearly finished...let's just say the Kempston adaptor on my 48K had seen better days!

Managed to find it online yesterday, although it was the C64 port. It's nice to be able to finish an entire game in about half an hour and have a sense of accomplishment

Thanks Ferral for the cool comp, if I was to win I'd like Blades of Time please

Re: Competiton - Win one of 6 Steam Games

@HalloweenJack sorry but that's the specy version, the best version of elite was the BBC micro version,

It was sooo good I'd actually put my self through hours of torture aka the bbc micro joystick http://wouter.bbcmicro.net/pictures/...ks_british.jpg just to play it
Still one of the best analogue sticks I've ever used, just ergonomically wasn't designed to be held but a human hand.

Frontier Elite II while it did give you a far richer world and did some very cleaver stuff with curved polygons to create amazing yet low polygon graphics for the time, however the realistic Newtonian physics didn't make for fun combat and there was a lot of unfinished scripted events and story.

This is actually so hard, there's too many.

Imogen a wonderful puzzle platformer with a quirky sense of humour
there's a full colour freeware remake http://imogen.ovine.net/ But I think I prefer the original look

Citadel, not the best graphics but a massive action/adventure/platformer

Castle Quest, one if the things I remember about this was someone made a map editor for it, it's actually a rather short game, but it was a bit of a time sink because you had to spend hours trying to figure out what to do.
Also quite a few bits of the map make it look like something is there when there's actually nothing there, so you could waste time trying to figure out how to get there when you cannot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71LF2PjYgnM good quality but a bad video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Spl9OP8Ivmc full walk but bad quality, but gives you a better idea of the game play

good site for old bbc games http://www.bbcmicrogames.com/ I think I had about every game on there.

Give this a bump as it ends in just over 24 hours, may run it a few extra days thinking on it to see if I get a few more entries.

I am also including Primordia Steam key onto this giveaway
