My main problem is no matter how good the mod is ARMA2 is one of the worst engines I've played in recent years and I can't bring myself to put any time into the game due to it.
I'll check out the stand alone game or the ARMA 3 mod depending what comes first.
As for an answer to your question... How much do you want to play it? Right now ARMA2 is still a bit pricey for what it is but its constantly up on sales either on steam or via hotukdeals so you could wait for that to come up cheap and take a shot as you won't be out of pocket much. If you don't care here or there if you play it soon then why not wait?

True, I wouldn't want to pay the full price for it - hopefully steam sales comes soon and it's in there!
Steam Summer sale was 12th July last year so soon soon!!!! It's actually depressing how much its exciting me.

The official forums are full of "When is going to be released" threads which quickly get the answer "We don't now, he has never said".
Current rumour is a alpha some point this month but there is no evidence to back it up.

It was originally supposed to be released in June, but it really feels like they keep on getting new and cool ideas and then chose to wait until they've added them before releasing the standalone (features such as disease - awesome right?)
If you don't already own Arma II: Combined Ops then it's worth waiting for the Standalone. Unless you can get it for a couple of quid there is no point in buying a game that is 5 years old at this point. I do love ArmA II and it's great fun with friends, but everyone plays ArmA III now.
It looks like we'll see the Alpha for Dayz Standalone within 4-6 weeks. I would hold on for now!
Arma 3 should be going beta in the next 2 weeks too.
If you can put up with the bugs then get DayZ now!

I still can't believe this is being released on the ArmA 2 engine and not the ArmA 3 engine... on top of the fact its taken so long and been so hyped I've kinda lost interest due to the development time. With nearly every player being suspect due to cheating, the bugs, limited ingame content and the fact 90% of my friends have stopped playing too. The only thing kept me going was the modded servers, but even now I am bored
stopped playing DayZ when it got hacked to death.
do not buy it until stand alone as they basically stopped supporting it.
