On the subject of "cartoony" graphics, personally I find it depends on the game, DOTA2 vs LOL is a good example here, lol has a more cartoony look to it but at the same time that gives it a cleaner look making it a bit easier to see what's going on.

One thing I've found is that youtube is very handy for seeing what a game is like before I buy it.
Could be just my age too I dunno, I just expected so much more ( at least decent 3D ) by now and different ways of breaking the mold.

I dont even mind if its terrible or 2d graphics if it brings something new like minecraft or Limbo, but these endless FPS or RPG shooters like dishonored , skyrim are just the same thing all over again with the same boring mechanics - even games like deus ex had more innovation ( losing arms ) you dont see in todays games .. simple things , quirks , yet its all the same..

I'd agree - I played Dota 2 for the grand total of six minutes then uninstalled it. I knew in those six minutes that it wasn't my type of game.

Also agree about the RTS thing. I do miss the base building games, being able to take your time, explore your options and then attack. Been hoping a a decent one to come out for a while. I'm thinking about going back and playing Dawn of War again.

Yeah, Im more of defensive player so having to attack and take ground deep into enemy grounds all the time is not my style , stronghold crusader ( 1st one ) even with economy elements was great fun , almost perfect along with of course Supreme Commander.

But thats me , I like to feel the build up and watch it unfold , not fight 100 skirmishes in 10 mins

Yes , everything is so focused on attacking id like to see more geared towards defense , and other tatics , but not on the big epic scale like Total War ( which i hate the look of ) or based on how many troops etc you can build in the quickest most efficient order.

That's why I liked Ruse so much , you could sort of bluff which you can't do in either other games.

It would be nice also to see exploration rewarded more with big rewards that can tip the edge too or add unknown elements like other armies invading randomly so your never quite sure .

Im pretty sure there was game ( GW2 ) that also had NPCS that basically betrayed you which is something else I love the concept of.

If you could get all that in game with COH presentation Id be a happy bunny.

Sounds like it's just not your game plain and simple, lots of people like it, lots of people don't (myself included).

Have you tried the Supreme Commander games?
If I were you I'd just snoop around for demos of strategy games until you find something that you like.

Yes, both of them , the first is better imo , I actually liked Demigod too despite it being tower game .

Another game I really liked was Operation Flashpoint : Dragon Rising - much like mount & blade I really like the idea of being on the ground with the fighting ( which can't do in stuff like COH because of all the crappy managing ) so I'd definitely be down anything like that too .

Infact this expansion for M&B looks pretty damm good ( now can someone explain to me how this looks so much better than games like Dishonored clocking over 10 gb ??? )

Other games that look interesting to me include Men of Ware & Order of War , and last but not least a game based on one of my favourite comic book series ( fables )

Have you had a look at Wargame Airland Battle? I've been really tempted by it, but I'm trying to cut down on the games I buy until I finish some of the others I have.
    darrensen(Squirl) plays it http://forums.hexus.net/pc/284089-wa...nd-battle.html

But if you really are looking for "different" then have a look at Divinity: Dragon Commander, which does look like a very odd blend of bits.
The main weakness of it seems to be that the rts is a bit weak and favours zerg rush tactics, the strongest part seems to be the out of combat rpg stuff

I think I watched that vid of Airland before and immediately did not like the fact you could not really see or interact with battles on more personal leve or closer up.

Not really a fan of how Divinity: Dragon Commander looks - again it looks very cartoony - which I don't like in war games much for some reason.

So you like strategy games where you can zoom right in and feel like part of the action?

There was a Roman based strategy game a while back which let you take control of some of your people mid battle you might like, can't remember the name though...

    Have you ever played Desperados?

    Re: Dota 2 I don't get it.....

I'm into the Men Of War series and Warzone 2100 right now great fun.

Just dig around on Google, you'll find the best types of games are the ones which are not talked about all the time

I can't recommend much because I am into a lot of old games.

Rise and Fall: Civilisations at War was the strategy game I was talking about.

I personally love Desperados, 2 and 3 also offer a 3rd person option so you can control your characters directly.
