It looks just like that WOW defense game from over a decade ago , with horrible graphics and heroe characters with the usual cliched spell move set we've seen hundred times before..
and this is game of year ?
I don't get it..

hmm it has horrible graphics ..that's questionable. i am enjoying the game after playing several hours with bots, ill admit it is very hard to get the grips of and a minority of the fan base are unwelcoming to newcomers
It's not for you, move on.![]()
game ` genre` have different fans - RTS , tower defence , mmo , fps , RP etc - so you don't like DOTA2? - find a game genre you do like!
It's OK. We're here for you. But you have to know when to let go and move on. It may be bad in the short term, but over time you'll know it was the right decision.
What kind of games do you like? Have you looked at something a bit unusual like Divinity: Dragon Commander?- esp after buying this damm laptop in hope of playing some good ones...
Yeah , Im not into any 1 type of game really, all the newer games have this horrible ambiance I don't like either ,like the sort of glistening effect youd see in a new age video ,that really kills the mood for me ( esp on my laptops monitor ) In hindsight i think I'll just look at a lot of older games like Anno , Fable , dark souls and definitely KOH on Playstation 2 emu which I've never - but always wanted to play.
Tried Dishonored a bit and just hated it too , which was weird given how I like steam punk - again i think its that horrible sheeny effect that mainly killed it for me , I like it dark and gritty and that immersive setting that feels dangerous , never really felt that in this.

Sounds like you might like some of the recent kickstarted wonders then - wasteland 2 for example.
In part a lot of that "sheen" you're talking about is from Bloom effects, this is why we should have graphics options in games.
So if the game has half decent options turn off the bloom.
The original DOTA was a mod for warcraft3 (not wow) an offshoot of the tower defence genera with the competitive nature of a multi-player rts added in.
DOTA2 has been around for a while but final release has been tied up but some bitter legal wrangles, which delayed release for a couple of years.
DOTA2 is know for a quite steep difficulty curve, many people prefer League of legends (LOL) for being easier to get into.
DOTA games are one of the current "hot" genera at the moment, I'd suggest having a look at Awesomenauts, which is a 2d platformer DOTA game and one of the other better ones.
If you want a diablo style game I'd have a look at Torchlight2

I was generously given a key for DOTA2 from this very forum a couple of months ago and until this weekend I hadn't had a chance to play it. I listen to the Bombcast so hear Brad's stories about it quite a bit, and have tried watching Daily DOTA a couple of times. I didn't get it at all, not in a "I don't get why this is popular" kind of way, but a "I literally have no idea what's going on" way. Normally I get the general idea of a game even if I don't play it, but with DOTA2, it seemed way too out there for me.
However, this weekend I gave it a go and while to start with all of the options and upgrades etc felt a bit overwhelming, I think I am beginning to get it now and it's actually quite fun. I think they've done a great job with regards to player feedback. By feedback I mean, the sounds, and graphics and stats that pop up (not claiming it's original, but it works). It's addictive in a grind kind of way (like those Facebook/Android apps).
Here's the thing though for me, I have absolutely no desire to play online against others. I am actually quite enjoying the single lane tutorial level, just because I can mess about and figure things out. I watched a few matches as well and having it run through the in game engine instead of a stream was pretty cool actually, especially with decent commentary (even if I still don't really know what's going on).
I get why it's popular, but I don't think I'll ever play it in that way.
I have played Dota2 and LoL and both are good games. Dota2 is less user friendly compared to LoL which is more simplistic and eases newbies into the game. However, I find LoL to be a much better game in general![]()
Graphics wise, they both are relatively poor... Albeit you can change the settings from low/medium/high detail etc, but it still doesn't make much of a difference.
PS: If anyone plays LoL, add me! coNNN![]()
Politics is were the working man pays his hard earned money to a group of clueless people to make suspect decisions.
Im the same with COH2 , i like it but i truly suck at micro managing and tend to panic with so much going on ..
I almost beat the damm pc on easy , but they just seem to be one step ahead all the time no matter what I do, I much prefer straightforward strategy at slower pace where i can build things up , but in COH2 I feel rushed all the time.
It's not an easy game to learn, even if it seems quite simple in principle.
To play it, and play it well enough to win, you need to invest time in a few Heroes and understand their strengths and weakness' fully inside and out. Each heroe has multiple paths it can take depending on the items you purchase or upgrades.
You need to be able to consider how to play as the game is unfolding, upgrading as you go and hoping each choice is the right one.
In my opinion DOTA 2 is one of the most newbie unfriendly games out there but also one of the most rewarding once the basics have been learnt.
For a free game, it doesn't matter if you don't like it. Try Planet Side 2 if you like FPS's, or Skyrim for more fantasy rpg gaming.
I think that's one of the appeals of DOTA games, because you only control your toon you only have one thing to micro, you do have to macromanage in the wider game and your build.
On the subject of "cartoony" graphics, personally I find it depends on the game, DOTA2 vs LOL is a good example here, lol has a more cartoony look to it but at the same time that gives it a cleaner look making it a bit easier to see what's going on.
One thing I've found is that youtube is very handy for seeing what a game is like before I buy it.
