Spectrum Games covers & manuals etc - preservation

Yesterday I committed to scanning all my current spectrum games covers, manuals, tapes and anything else in the box to hopefully eventually be put up on World of Spectrum to preserve them for generations to come.

Been doing them in 800DPI (600 is fine however)

Has anyone got any old dusty ZX Spectrum stuff they don't want that is just sitting in the loft, corner of a room or wherever?

Or is anyone else interested in joining in with the scanning of the games etc to help preserve the 8 bit generation, its a pretty good cause as some of the artwork alone is absolutely superb and worth saving.

Mort over on the WoS forums created a thread asking if anyone could help out :

sorry I was Ammy CPC but I have a huge stash of stuff for that if there's a similar outfit for the Amstrad.

As well as the Spectrum, I've got a stack of games still.

I can join in the scanning if required, not sure what games I've got though - I'll have a look over the weekend

Re: Spectrum Games covers & manuals etc - preservation

Cool, give Mort a shout over at World of Spectrum.

I have gave him access to a folder on my PC and used Dropbox so he can grab them

He said 600DPI is fine but I have been doing them at 800DPI, much sharper high def pics.

    Naming is for example :

    SuperHangOnInlay01
    SuperHangOnInlay02
    SuperHangOnTape

If it is budget it would be :

    SuperHangOnHitSquadInlay
    SuperHangOnHitSquadTape

Only do say SuperHangOnInstructions for example if there is a separate set of instructions for the game. Most Ocean and Imagine games had the instructions printed on the inlays so just number up for each scan.

Done Turbo Outrun this afternoon, instructions separate with poster on flip side and it was to big for scanner bed so had to scan top half and then bottom half and piece together in Publisher and trim any overlap in Paintshop, then do the same with the instruction side, bit of a pain to do but it has come out nice and barely noticeable.

Re: Spectrum Games covers & manuals etc - preservation

In all fairness its not my idea mate, Mort over at World of Spectrum asked if anyone could either send him inlays that don't have tapes to go with them or if members could send scanned images. He is hoping they will get added to the World of Spectrum database, so credit has to go to him and martijn for doing this

Quoted from first post in thread at World of Spectrum by Mort :

"Myself and some of the tzx preservation team are scanning in instructions and inlays in hd, well 600 dpi. If you can donate any that are spare or incomplete that would not matter.if you would scan yourself anything would be beneficial. Between us so far we have scanned around 2000 games. As soon as martijn is back we hope to see them on the site. Otherwise we have Dropbox as a temporary store for them if you would like any or contribute.
I have done something similar way back on the c64 called gamebox64, this should future proof the instructions and inlays. If you are short of time or can donate any old tapes or inlays (we would not need the cassette cases which would help on postage.i can scan them in and send you the digital versions back.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer, and I scanned most of the magazine's on the site so not a problem for me to do.

    Regards Stephen aka Mort"
