I don't understand how the continue to underestimate demand...?

Grand Theft Auto Online launch faces server worries
Seriously?!? You would have though pre-orders would have given a slight indication that a incredibly large number of people would have bought it. Or maybe they were hoping it would be ok, and they wouldn't have to spend any more money on infrastructure?

Not that I've bought it, and when I do I doubt I'll play online...

Call me a cynic, but I can't help but assume they are quite purposely not buying/renting a huge amount of servers because they know the demand will only be insanely high for a day or two. Actually I don't even know if that's cynical, it makes sense to me.

It appears they have massively exceeded their expectations in this regard. Its far more successful than they expected it to be. Pre orders will only give so much of a clue to final figures, savvy gamers will wait for reviews and ignore the hype as best they can. I personally didnt read reviews but did see several scores a couple days before release, and bought on day of release simply because i was bored. Very glad i did, the game is incredible.

Good luck to them on the online front, pretty sure they will have teething troubles, but what first time company doesnt. I remember only too well waiting for the battlenet servers to be up, or being unable to log into a game of Diablo but could join the chat rooms, and I also remember repeatedly hitting the log in button for Everquest 6 or 7 hours after the servers were supposed to be up. There will be problems, people will cry and there will be wailing and much gnashing of teeth, forums shall have infinite threads detailing the various couplings with animals the extended families of Rockstar North have participated in. Possibly some aggrieved gamers will decide that because they cannot get online to commit theft, larceny, butchery, murder and the solicitation of prostitutes, they will take to the streets instead to cause mayhem.
This would be funny, as the majority of said aggrieved gamers would have the muscle tone of a sick weasel, the pallid monitor tan of a keyboard warrior and the combat skills of a particularly dead wombat. Due to the lack of skills inherent in such a specimen we can deduce that no talent for actual car theft would be present and they would resort to car jacking at traffic lights, at which point they would undoubtedly be overpowered by somebodies auntie Ethel.

For the rest of us, no less dedicated but rather more functional gamers, we'll stay offline or play a different game till they get it sorted and we can actually enjoy the game as the good people at Rockstar North intended us to.

If I were marketing a triple-A game and didn't get widespread headlines stating the enormous demand was going to cause server crash issues, then I wouldn't be doing my job.

And there darn well better be actual server issues when it actually launches, to get a bit more coverage.

Exactly, all this is just more and more publicity.
I'll still try log on but if I don't manage to, I'll just continue with all the other missions I have to do

This does indeed smack heavily of the kind of hype you get around every major console/ithingy launch. 'Oh Noes we will never have enough and will sell out on the first day then conveniently find a warehouseful as soon as the hype dies down.'
