Stupid compulsory flying sections in FPS games!!

    RANT ON!

Why the bloody heck do devs always feel the need to pollute perfectly fine FPS games with stupid flying sections, and then give you controls which are as responsive as a couple of soggy bagettes in a pile of jam?? Then they give you a stupid save system, meaning you need to go through the whole rigmarole from the beginning.

Yes,SR4 I am looking at you. It does not help that the same section is also bugged too, which increases my disdain over such sections.

If I want to play a flying game I would get one.

Some of the devs need whacking in the face with the aforementioned soggy jammy bagette.

    RANT OFF!!

I think the last time a flying section was done right, in a non-flying game, was probably Turrican / Turrican 2...

Aw man - those were among my favourite games on the Amiga. Odds on them being redone as Steam Greenlight?

Re: Stupid compulsory flying sections in FPS games!!

I'm surprised it hasn't been brought back from the grave given that we have (for example) a new Giana Sisters game and things like Mighty Number 9 on Kickstarter.

    There are things like this:

    http://www.chip.de/downloads/Hurrican_17265566.html

...out there, though last time I looked at that one, it wasn't great and the other clones / remakes I looked at, at the time, were worse... I occasionally fire up WinUAE and play through the originals - they look pretty bad on my plasma but they still play fine.

Oh and - by the way - if you've only ever played them on the Amiga you should go look at the C64 versions on youtube. They are surprisingly good (amazing for what the machine is capable of) and a little different to the Amiga versions (mostly the boss fights, especially in #2 if memory serves).

After a bit of a google there are a few Turrican inspired games out there, the best of which appears to be Gun Lord, which looks familiar to me though I don't think I've played it...

Re: Stupid compulsory flying sections in FPS games!!

I found a mod that is supposed to bypass the stupid section, and it does not seem to work now. FFS. This section is sucking all the joy out of the game. It does not help you need to travel 1.5KM,go through a whole load of cutscenes and other stuff before you hit the crappy flying section. The save system is so fail that it actually will not save any part of the mission once you accepted it and will only save upto the point you need to do it.

Re: Stupid compulsory flying sections in FPS games!!

I dont mind it being there, for example in SR3, it was okay. In Batman AA, I skipped the flying challenges, as they were a bit annoying. Its okay to have it, but having a good flying experience in game is something else i guess.

I didn't like the flying in Crysis tbh. Might have been the fact that I was using a controller though but it absolutely sucked hard. Or was it supposed to because the ship is damaged?

Battlefield 3 was pretty terrible for this in my opinion. Particularly as you couldn't even actually FLY the plane. <.<

I think it may be due to marketing executives. They might think 'flying scenes' would look good in advertisement and drive more sales. But I agree they are a diversion and do not serve any purpose

I actually thought the flying section was pretty good in crysis, it it wasn't too long and was just challenging enough - the boss fight after however... So poor
