Wow, came as a bit of a surprise to me if I'm honest.

Me too. I don't understand why Ken Levine doesn't do what he wants with Irrational Games still living on. It seems strange to take members from his current team somewhere else to achieve what he wants...
It is good to hear that he'll still be creating games though, and a bonus that he is interested in a flatter structure with better connection to gamers. Sounds promising from a team leader that has delivered some brilliant games already.
MAXIMISE PROFITS!!smaller, narrative-heavy games that will be released digitally
I think devs are looking at how well games like Flappy birds are doing, and realise doing small cheap to make games which can be done quickly, increases the amount of money they make and reduces the risk they need to take.
Meh,they can keep them for all that I care.
If I am going to pay decent money for a game,it better be for something which has had some major effort behind it.
The whole FPS genre is under attack from by numbers accountants on one end and the retrotards on the other end and devs are listening to both.
Edit!!
Read: CASUAL GAMERS. I expect the games will be released on iPads, etc."While I'm deeply proud of what we've accomplished together, my passion has turned to making a different kind of game than we've done before," Levine wrote. "To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience."
They can use a minimum team, release the game in an episodic way and make moar money that way.

Interesting comments on Twitter from Jean-Paul LeBreton who worked at Irrational during the development of Bioshock.

It looks like dozens of people are being fired as the company had between 100 to 200 people it seems.
Well this isn't good news. I don't understand why the whole studio needs to close, as Levine could just work on smaller games anyway, right? Ah well. I hope to see something positive from the team who are leaving/being fired in the future.
does this mean the end of BIOSHOCK? i hope not i really liked the infinite one
