    Steam and the VAC system....

Question! my friend has an issue with steam and the VAC system.

Long story short every call of duty game he buys gets banned, he cheated way back on mw2 on pc and got VAC banned,

    Bought mw3, got banned

but then call of duty black ops 2 was banned after only 8 hours of play,

Now he resintalled windows to make sure nothing was on his pc, bought cod ghosts installed it played it for 13 hours, went back to his account...and now it is VAC banned.

Would i be right in thinking that something is not right here and surely something must be able to be done? damn takes the mick! yea he understood when he actually cheated but now....£60 was spent on that game...so thoughts?

Re: Steam and the VAC system....

From my understanding of how VAC works...

Either someone instantly hacked his new account and ran a known cheat

    or

    He cheated again.

I know which is the most likely.

    A nice quote:
Nothing else has an influence. It's impossible to be banned because you were reported, because you were in a hacked lobby, because you were in the same party as a friend who cheated, because you were using a recording program and whatnot. None of these things trigger a VAC ban. Only modified game files and/or cheats do.

Alternatively: he's sharing his account with someone who is cheating. In which case he's an idiot.

Re: Steam and the VAC system....

im the only person with his details, (because im helping him) and i understand everyone instantly assumes "cheat" which is why he purposely live streamed it all so everyone could clearly see he was not cheating,

The thing is with black ops 2 i belive those hours were only in single player mode, he didnt actually enter mp so explain that one.

Re: Steam and the VAC system....

Do the CoD games do the same as the source games? If you get banned in one of the games it bans you in all of them (and future ones).

If thats the case then that explains it. He got himself banned in MW2, every time he gets a new game he can play it until it runs a VAC check and then bans him.

Re: Steam and the VAC system....

Sound right but abit unfair surely? i just spoke to him he is going to buy cod 4 and record it all and only play single player and see if it bans him,

Also i actually got it wrong, it was mw3 he hacked, not mw2 and i know that when he got banned on mw3 he actually got banned on black ops 1 and mw2 aswell at the same time...

Re: Steam and the VAC system....

Not sure about unfair. I'm all for mass banning multiplayer cheaters.

When you get VAC banned, not all your games in your Steam Account get banned, you usually get VAC banned from the game you cheated in, but there are a few exceptions.

If you cheat in any HL1 engine game, you will get banned from all games of the HL1 engine:

    Counter-Strike 1.6
    Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
    Day of Defeat
    Deathmatch Classic
    Half-Life
    Opposing Force
    Ricochet
    Team Fortress Classic
If you cheat in any of the following Source Engine games you will get banned from all of the following Source Engine games:

    Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
    Counter-Strike: Source
    Day of Defeat: Source
    Half-Life Deathmatch Source
    Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
Source SDK Base (required for mods)
    Team Fortress 2
Thats the deal with source games, don't know if CoD follows the same idea.

Re: Steam and the VAC system....

I was aware when he cheated and i told him not to, he tried to convince me to use it but ye i told him he would be banned and wouldnt have none of it.

But going back to it after a quick google it seems that once you have cheated on cod it should only affect that game, however here is something for you to think about, he knew full well if he cheated on black ops 2 he would get banned, so he didnt for fear of loosing his brand new game, he lost it and the same applied for cod ghosts,

im all for the banning of cheaters but when someone is getting banned for no reason at all i suspect that VAC is doing something wrong, i do understand it is pretty good at what it does but i dont think it is working properly here, at least id want a reason for what VAC found on his PC exactly as like i said fresh install to prevent this from happening...

An now roughly £200+ worth of games he cannot play online, that he paid for and didnt cheat on, pretty sure that is unfair.

Re: Steam and the VAC system....

Sounds like something iffy is going on. I would be tempted to create a new steamID.

Problem is that both the CoD guys and Value are extremely hardarsed when it comes to VAC, if you get banned you get banned and not many people seem of got that reversed.

Yep i know people automatically assume if your VAC banned then you must have cheated, he knew the score spent silly money on a new game that he knew if he cheated he would get VAC banned, he ent stupid guys and wouldnt do that. Will be interesting to see what steam says when his cod 4 gets banned, as we are pretty sure it will, going to be recording the pc constantly and live streaming to prove there is nothing iffy going on.

May even get him to reinstall windows again and only install steam. As i would be interested to know peoples thoughts then.

Re: Steam and the VAC system....

I thought maybe DNS cache, but a proper reinstall of windows ought to sort that? Probably tied to his steam ID then. Would need a new ID, probably email, and flushed DNS at least.

I might be wrong, but I thought that VAC only kicks in on multiplayer? Probably wrong though, because

    a) I rarely play these games online
    b) when I do I play the game for the fun of it, not because I'm some sort of hyper-competitive eejit or troll

so I have very little experience with VAC

Re: Steam and the VAC system....

While server admins may choose to ban specific players, server admins cannot VAC ban players. The VAC system is automated - contacting Steam Support to report cheaters is not necessary, nor will Steam Support act on any information provided.

The VAC system reliably detects cheats using their cheat signatures. Any third-party modification to a game designed to give one player an advantage over another is classified as a cheat or hack and will trigger a VAC ban. This includes modifications to a game's core executable files and dynamic link libraries.
I am not a VAC expert but get your friend to open a customer support ticket with Steam and find out why he was banned or any evidence that pointed towards as it is rather strange that he was VAC banned if he really did not cheat or used hack.

More information on VAC is here:

is he using a 3rd party program to control POV? i heard that they were banning people for such things now. however from what i've heard that's Infinity wards doing and is only for the latest cod but i've not played the series for a very long time so could be wrong
