HL2 gold came in the post today :D

opened the door to mr FedEx today and he handed me a rather nice box from valve

inside was my:

Cap, 3 posters [gman, alex + gordon], HL2 soundtrack plus prima strategy guide, and a collectors ediion box [plus a postcard and car sticker]

no game yet tho ;/

still its nice to have the rest

Maybe to yous in the UK! but over here its not! A game at most costs $39.95...

a pc game in the uk usually retails for 30-35 pounds, which equates to 55-65 at the current war-ravaged dollar.

and a quick look at some us game retailers suggests $50 is the normal price for a release

so hl2 with a bucket of extra stuff, a number of extra games not in the normal purchase (such as hl source, dod source), and international shipping (as well as 17.5% tax) isn't as bad as it sounds

Which reminds me, anyone know if dod can be purchased separately afterwards if you have say a standard non steam edition?

probably, but i expect only via steam

that said, they've been adding payment options recently, 3 new cards accepted in the last update. perhaps maestro/solo/electron aren't that far off

But, do you get the lot on discs? DoD/CS etc?

Steam is all well and good but you know you'd rather have a full retail box rather than re-downloading 3gb+ just to get HL2 again.

i don't think you do get things on discs, no

but the last steam update added the ability to back up games, i.e. it'll create a bunch of cd-sized chunks you can burn then reinstall from if you need to

yeah DOD is suppoed to be available separately later on - and no you dont get the discs

but HL2 will easily fit on a dvd, and a couple of DVDs will allow backup of the whole steam cache.

All the retail box CDs contain are a copy of steam and the cache files anyway - such is the curse of steam.

I prefer Steam - I hate having to wait for things from the Shop (online) and if I am desp ill pop in to town and get it from Asda/whoever - they trash on price

I like the idea of the game being ready and waiting for me on steam, pre loaded. The release date gets ever closer
