Half Life 2 freezing on startup

damnit
just installed hl2 and signed up to the crap that is steam

On the first loading screen though it just freezes and hangs. Cant exit it, just gotta reboot.

Anyone seen anyone else with this prob or know whats up?

Tried the usual driver and DX update?

I had a couple of probs with sound but solved them by upping the number of hardware channels on my card. I guessed it was a sound prob as the game crashed back to desktop with an error message along the lines of "soundvers_blah blah blah" or something like that. Fiddled with the soundcard and it went ok.

updating from 9.0b to 9.0c
apart from that my sys is uptodate

hmm game doesnt actually crash
i think there is a new screen behing the loading screen as my cursor changes when i move it round the middle of the screen

I had this except I got a crash to desktop, it seems there are other experiencing this too, mine was due to a corrupt download on the preload, it was file C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamAppssource models.gcf, the one that preloaded first was 6kb bigger then the one I redownloaded.

To get it to redownload rename that file it anything other than its current name, load up steam and then try to play half life, the program files will be downloaded again, bad news is its the 460MB file that I had to redownload, thank god for the 1.5mb line.

is the game freezing on the blurry picture with loading written in the corner? if so i had to wait a good 5 - 10 minutes for it to load the first time
