    Question HL2 Package Differences

Is there a difference between this half life product on amazon

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...045225-0094260

and the bronze package from steam?

Also, what is the difference between day of defeat: sorce, counterstrike: source and half life source? I'm not sure how many of these (if any) the amazon one has included. Would they be useful to get if they aren't in the amazon one?

I'm beginning to think I should have got HL2 through steam rather than amazon, but it should be here tomorrow .

You should have bought the Silver version from steam, you'd have gotten Valves back catalog with HL2 for the same price as HL2 alone.

Difference between the retail copy and the bronze package: you get a DVD with the retail copy.

Amazon will just have included Counterstrike: Source with that. The three "Source" games are all remakes of their original versions but they use the new Source engine that new physics engine (Havok? Maybe not, name escapes me). Counterstrike is an online Counter-Terrorists vs. Terrorists type game, Day of Defeat is an online World War 2 game (never played it myself though) and Half-Life is well...need I explain?

So is day of defeat for example downloadable on it's own, or does it only come with HL2?
What kind of things are in the back catelouge?

If the silver package is really really a lot better than the one I'm getting, then I might sent it back and download it from steam.

OK, since I've brought it from amazon and it's coming tomorrow, so I can't cancel, can you get the other extras like days of defeat else where without buying another copy of HL2?

I *think* you can get DoD from Steam, if you've got a credit card. DoD:Source hasn't been released yet though.

Oh erm OK - you're confusing me more now. So you're saying there's a day of defeat and a day of defeat source?

    What's the difference?

    ***************************************************
EDIT - I just went onto the HL board on www.gamefaqs.com, and it shows LOADS of different half lives. What's all the differences between half life: ??????

Is it sort of a load of minigames that people have made to play multiplayer on? And are some of them free, or not?

games with 'source' after the name are remakes using the half life 2 engine.

day of defeat, counterstrike etc are add-ons for half life 1, the source titles are addons for hl2. none of them are free in the sense that you _NEED_ hl1 or hl2 first. again, refer to the chart.

Well, on the link I provided, there must have been about 10 HL: ****** titles. Do you have to pay for all of them once you have HL2, or are they freely downloadable as other versions that people have made (like maps in UT: 2004)?

    I'll try to explain.

With half life 1 on steam you can get access to

    Codename Gordon
    Counter-Strike
    Team Fortress Classic
    Day of Defeat
    Half Life
    Deathmatch Classic
    Opposing Force
    Ricochet

If you purchess Condition Zero on steam of threw retail channels then you get access to

    Condition Zero
    Condition Zero Deleted Scenes
    Counter-Strike: Source

    Thats the basics.

Now the different packages come into force.

HL2 bronze gives you access to

    HL2
    Counter-Strike: Source

HL2 silver gives you access to

    HL2
    Counter-Strike: Source
    Half-Life: Source
    Day of Defeat: Source

+ all of the back catolog

ie all of the HL 1 stuff

    Codename Gordon
    Counter-Strike
    Team Fortress Classic
    Day of Defeat
    Half Life
    Deathmatch Classic
    Opposing Force
    Ricochet

HL2 Gold is just silver with the extra bits

Source is just the old mods remade with the new gfx engine and that.

    I hope you follow that.

Me i got HL1 ages ago i also baught op4 and blue shift. I also baught CS:Z and has for hl2 i got that cos i have a ati voucher i might upgrade to the silver package

Yeah I bought HL1, OpF, Blue shift, Gunman C etc..
Tho still ended up buying the silver package; just for HL:S and DoD:S..

Plus now I have two steam accounts... (with access to all the HL1 stuff).

DoD:S & HL:S won't be made freely available; as they come with the Silver/Gold editions and not bronze.
Although other mods (such as NS:S and who knows what else) will most likely be provided free. Still you never know; Valve might decide that only silver/gold versions can use mods (esp. if they become "official").. unlikely but thats what my m8 is worrying about hehe (he has the retail/bronze edition).

You can buy a copy of Half-life for around £6-7 from amazon and you'd get

Codename Gordon, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic, Day of Defeat, Half Life
    Deathmatch Classic, Opposing Force, Ricochet.

Basically you'd have Silver minus the (very disappointing) HL: Source and Day of Defeat: Source for around £7 less (Silver is around £40 inc VAT afaik) - which may become available for individual purchase after Valve decide they cant milk anymore from their STEAM only packages.
