    Microphone?

Is a microphone a good idea for playing online games stuch a counterstrike (among others)? Is it worth it?

At the moment, I COULD (but don't want to) use my parents 5 year old mic that came with their computer. It goes all staticy every time I move it when plugged in.

    So, 2 questions:

    1. Is it worth it - do i need one?
    2. If it's a good idea, where's the best place to get a decent cheapish one?

I don't know anything about the prices of mic's, so I'm guessing that I don't want to pay more than about £10 inc P&P.

my advice to you is to spend £20 on a decent ish headset instead of getting just a mic.

some people (G4Z :@) use a mic and speakers, and im programs like ts you can hear yourself through their speakers which gets annoying.

i have a set of platronics audio 80's and they are great, just what i need

    hope this helps

oh, and voice comms in game is great, specially if used properly

I have this one. You get a good mic and headphones all in one!

If you dont already have a decent 5.1 speaker set, i would seriously consider these:

5.1 Headphones with headset style mic. I've heard good reviews

If you are thinking of joining a clan, playing matches, or even just chatting to folk on whilst playing... YES.

    They are a must

Plantronics Audio .90's are the best bang for buck

As I said above, I really don't want to spend much more than £10, but I like the idea of surround sound ones. Can you really hear people behind you? I've always thought headphone can only be stereo because they only have 2 speakers.

If they're over what I want to spend, I might ask someone for a xmas pressie .

i've just broken my audio 80's and replaced them with a pair of audio 90's - a bit heavier - but very, very good - plus I think dabs is still selling them with a skype voucher (other places might too - but I haven't checked)

does make a huge difference to chat and gaming. you do look like a bit of a dork when using a webcam tho

From the reviews i have heard they are well worth the cash

Especially if you dont have a decent set of speakers yet, good sound is bliss, ive taught a few friends that by convincing them to upgrade to decent speakers, they were amazed

Hmmm, perhaps I should just upgrade the speakers and forget about a mic - (I'm not a big fan of "things on my head", I only wear a hat when it's VERY cold).

Actually, I use a headset but prefer to use the speakers for output, what I would like is to hear game music on speakers and voice on the headset, I am thinking of setting up another Pc next to it so I can run TS on that and have the voice and game sounds sperated. I would say any cheapish headset will do you, shouldnt cost more than a tenner
