What games couldn't you finish?
Some of the other threads here got me thinking about some games that I really enjoyed but couldn't quite finish and I was wondering what yours are?
Specifically thinking of games you liked - not the ones you didn't finish because they were turds :)
The main ones that spring to mind for me was Star Wars - Rogue Leader on the GameCube. I loved this game but I just couldn't get that final Deathstar level. Still bothers me lol.
Also the Aliens Vs Predator game on PC from around 1999 - the good one. When selecting the Aliens as a race I couldn't even find my way out of the initial spawn area. All the wall running totally confused me and I eventually gave up in shame
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
From recent memory:
Tomb Raider.....stuck at 99% with one item in the bunker to collect.....I am sure my save is bugged :(
Metal Gear Solid Revengeance......yet another Ninja Gaiden poorly balanced game where bosses are really tough and all the fights between them are extremely easy....just makes you lose interest in the game.
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
Any of the Final Fantasy or Shin Megami series.
Always get far into them, then get slightly bored or distracted and forget about it for months/years at a time.
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
tbh, I don't finish the vast majority of games I start - there's plenty I like, lots that I absolutely intend to get round to finishing sooner or later .... and then I don't play them for several months, try to remember where I was last time I played, can't decide if it's worth jumping back in or not, and just don't bother.
X-Com, Torchlight, and Dungeon Siege III are probably the top of the list ones right now: I doubt I'm as much as halfway through any of them, absolutely love playing them, and just never get round to firing them up again.... :(
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
Fallout 3 got bored a few hours in.
MOH 2010 (sp) Since the FOV was really low and not adjustable, lasted <5 mins.
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
the ones I haven't finished are mainly due to my own ineptness with quick-saving.
I tend to, every now and again, get to a part in the game where I die a few times, then I eventually kill that enemy and mash quick-save in triumphant jubilation. completely failing to realise the horde of other bigger enemies bearing down on me or my NPC im escorting.
usually I end up with a save where I have 2 seconds or so to kill everything before I die. then I just rage quit and promise to myself i'll go back to the game once i've relaxed a bit, because next time it wont be so bad, right?
said games include:
gothic 3 with CPT1.75 and CM2.6 - saved after killing a black troll, failing to realise the wayward arrow I fired alerted a 90 strong orc camp.
dead space 2 - i'm in a very small room with 5 necromorphs about to hit me and i'm on 1 charge left in my gun before it needs to reload, all my other guns are out of ammo.
its usually a few years before I go back to the game. I load up he save, wonder what I was doing so end up starting a new game, get to roughly the same part of the game, then rage quit again.
i'll never learn. :p plus it's part of the reason I have all my games installed, I promise myself ill carry on playing it and finish it one day, but I never do. but knowing I can just load up the game.exe and press load game, is comforting in a strange way.
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
It's a long time since I gave up a game because I was incapable of finishing it.
I think that's partly because repetitive failure made me hate the game and thus I stopped playing because I hated it. I couldn't for instance, work out how I was meant to play God of War III, and by the time I'd reached the stage where I needed to go on Youtube and research I was so frustrated with the whole thing I just packed it in.
I think also, modern games are so easy generally - or they offer a range of difficulty levels that makes it easy to dial it down if it's too tough. I remember having some on my PS1 that I was just incapable of finishing, but that's a very long time back now!
EDIT: Just remembered Gran Turismo 5 and the made up car with a gas turbine engine. I couldn't beat that challenge to save my life.
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
Has anyone ever completed Lemmings? Think that's the only one I've given up on every time. Still got my notepad of level codes from my childhood in a box in the attic.
Anything else I'm pretty consistent in completing, although some "pick up and play" games I'll spread over a good few months/years. Dirt showdown being one. Just started Portal 2 again, forgot how good it was.
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
I finished Lemmings on the Amiga......oh my, how long ago was that? (1991!!!! Almost a quarter of a decade ago - sheeesh)
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
Never could finish Lemmings on the Gameboy. Got everything done up to Mahem level 4 and just couldn't figure it out.
Dug out the old GB a couple of years ago, with the level codes still in the game case. Still couldn't do Mahem 4.
Google the solution => The level is bugged! You can't do it!!!!! It's impossible.
A lot of frustrating hours of my youth just... wasted.
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
Yeah I never did finish Lemmings either.
I also have the same issue as Scaryjim in that I often start a game and mean to go back to it but, but the time that I do, I struggle to remember the ins and outs of it and so can;t be bothered. Done this with Witcher 2, Borderlands 2, Dead Space 2, Portal 2, XCOM, Bastion, FEAR 3 and several others.
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
Tetris on the game boy
Skyrim, despite over 100 hours in, nice eye candy though
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
Plenty of games on the BBC Micro, tough old things. Theme Park, only once got onto a second location before going bankrupt - that was a hard game in full mode. More recently Red Dead Redemption: Got really far but got busy and had to stop, but controls are quite difficult on horseback and I just keep dying when I try and pick up from where I left off.
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
Borderlands 2 and XCOM come to mind. I probably stopped playing them because I grew frustrated with grinding legendaries in Borderlands and the onslaught of alien assaults in XCOM.
Re: What games couldn't you finish?
Back in the PS2 days, i couldn't for the life of me complete this certain mission on Driver 3, ended up giving up in the end :( Also, that and Skyrim, put like 200+ hours into it with barely doing a single main story mission.
Re: What games couldn\'t you finish?
well... i never could finish the achievements for a number of games. like n64\'s rogue fighter game, or left4dead2.
