Half-Life 2: Somewhat dissappointing?? (SPOILER WARNING!!)

Thats right, but don't get me wrong though I thought that 95% of the time it was excellent, it was just some significant factors that soured the experience.

1). I understand that piracy is a big problem but the approach Valve used wouldn't be acceptable in real life, it would be like arresting everyone and forcing them to convince the authorities that they're innocent.

2). Theres that annoying sound stuttering bug that just butchers the fps from a healthy 60 - 70 right down single figures. I know that there are fixes for this bug but its just not good enough.

3). And now I come to the ending, well not the actual ending itself but the whole citadel level was tosh, it looked terrible compared with the other levels and the only weapon you could use was that gravity gun which i loved but i also liked the other weapons a lot.

4). Half-Life 2 also failed to answer any questions about the original, its got so little to do in terms of story with the original in fact, that its like a whole new game.

5). Oh and it was painfully short as well, considering how long it took to make and how many times it was delayed.

The ending itself was acceptable because of the bullet time style bit and you can see the explosion frozen in time looks wicked and the whole GMAN thing appearing out of nowhere and leaving through that white white door...weird...

yea, whats with GMAN? having played hl1 and half way through hl2, WHY???

I found it too puzely and repetitive. In the end I put god mode on so I didnt have to bother killing all the fkn annoying head crabs, and those flying things that really piss me off.

graphics however are great, and im sure there will be MANY games basedon the hl2 engine, which willbe very much more enjoyable.

That stuttering bug is a right pain in the arse yes.

The ending... a bit of an anti climax considering how good the rest of the game was but it was by no means terrible.

As for the story i was completely clueless until i read the link someone posted in the twazillions of spoliers thread- that cleared things up a lot

It definately leaves you desperate for more thats for sure. Bring on HL3

Yeah, I was dissapointed at how short it was & how easy it was too. The stuttering thing go on my nerves also.

Again, great game on the whole, but too short & pants ending.

Didnt get the stuttering bug, however, did have a problem - and occasionally still do - with a memory reference error. However, I did complete it and thought it was great. Granted it was a bit short, but i would rather get through a not-overly-long game than be 85% through a really long one. Theres no feeling of closure otherwise, and the developers story never fully gets told to you.

I may be in the minority but I didnt think that the last level was that bad. I thought it was a good contrast to the real-life-ness of the other levels and helped to enhance the notion of the combine being an alien race. Mind you, there could have been more variety in ememies, possibly the large alien beasts that you see on your 'ride' and also the combine without armour.

The ending WAS a bit short, but I thought it was good that there wasnt just a big BOSS, but a set piece. The whole gaem played through as a film imo and the ending fitted it.

You can actually learn a lot of the plot if you pay enough attention - but people just want to get through the game instead (or like me - wanted to stay alive.)

There's a site that catalogues the story - can't remember the address.

w00t more people that agree with me.
Its not actually that good...its just because everyone expected it to be great, no one wants to admit that actually its not that great.
tbh I am not a fan of it at all.

i'll agree with u on that 1, hl2 wasnt all that good, infact, im more interested in getting the source version of the orginal, and hopefully some good modders will put good textures in it, then theres good game to play.

Squads. take out squads and the game would've been fine. "Sorry Gordon" just didn't cut it, and neither did not being able to kill them.

Playing it on a 6800Gt AMD 64 system at a mates is stunning though.

Hmmm, as I sit here with my HL2 t-shirt on I still beg to differ.

    I thought it was excellent.

Yeah i agree kez it was an excellent game.

Here we have a situation just like we had with doom3. A game is hyped up, so everyone expects it to be the best and most innovative game ever, and of course, its not. HL2 is the sequal to HL2, and as such it SHOULD feature very similar gameplay, but with improvements and advancements to the storyline. Doom 3 did this excellently, bringing doom gameplay with fancy graphics. HL2 brings HL1 gameplay with fancy graphics.

HL1 was and still is great fun, an excellent mix of combat, story and puzzels. Hl2 continues this in fine tradition. If you take the time to watch what is going on, listen to the speeches, read the notes lying about etc you are told the story very well, and can draw your own conclusions about the overall story. imho its much better to give out story details like this than through constant cutscenes.

It was definitely far too short though, and far too easy - even on hard mode. [swafeman shame on you for having to cheat ] It leaves you wanting more, just as HL1 did. Thats a good thing in a way, it lead me to re-play the game and I am sure that I will do again in the future

Agreed - the approach was a mess. You should need an internet connection to play a single player game, simple.

2). Theres that annoying sound stuttering bug that just butchers the fps from a healthy 60 - 70 right down single figures. I know that there are fixes for this bug but its just not good enough.
Agreed again. Its not on, I had it a few times when reloading from a save state and its a pretty obvious bug to get through testing.

3). And now I come to the ending, well not the actual ending itself but the whole citadel level was tosh, it looked terrible compared with the other levels and the only weapon you could use was that gravity gun which i loved but i also liked the other weapons a lot.
Once again, spot on. The last level was rubbish, the Grav Gun being able to pick up enemies was Ok at first, but once the novelty wore off, it was tedius.

4). Half-Life 2 also failed to answer any questions about the original, its got so little to do in terms of story with the original in fact, that its like a whole new game.
Yep. Although I was enjoying it, I never had the slightest clue what was going on in the grand scheme of things.

The pacing was wrong - levels drag on for too long, and there aren't enough of them. Twice as many levels that last half as long would have made for a more interesting game that you didn't get bored off. The Hover Boat level was too long, as was the room-to-room fighting with the annoying NPCs following you.

I've just recently finished the hoverboat section. (that was around a week and a half ago if not longer) and it was really getting on my nerves due to the level length. I havnt played it since due to that level.

Yeah, it looks nice. Plays really well and runs just dandy. Hoping theres no more stupid levels like that one again or I will just put it on my shelf and leave it till whenever. May actually get a game in tonite before me and Shelley have to do the Santa Claus thing for the 3 kids.

The pacing remains just as slow until the end. Ravenholm drags on for too long, as does Highway 17, and the level where you fight room-to-room with the 'help' of the other resistence members.

    I beg to differ.

I think people are far too critical of the pace. To me it was fine, just fine. I fear however, than my hardened Half Life loyalty may be skewing my vision. Still, that's not a bad thing from where I'm sitting.

Dont get me wrong. I like the game. I guess it may take me a while longer to get through it as I have 3 kids ! This gives me a chance to give it a rest for a week or so if I get bored with it so it shouldnt be to bad. Thing I didn't like about the airboat level was that it seemed overly long. I think it would have been just right if the finished it at the point where you stop off at the resistance fighters area instead of getting a gun added to the vehicle and yet another huge section. The on land bits I must admit on that section were excellent.
