Well I just downloaded the whole 380meg CS 1.6/Steam Bundle, installed it and guess what.
Steam won't ******* start now.
Valve, you've ****ed up a good en here.
Looks like it's time to pack CS in completely and play DC from now on...

steam = steaming pile of s***e. my brother downloaded it with the steam updater, crached every 5 mins, and the funny thing is, it tells u its download ing at 10X what it really is (we could check with netlimiter), or thats the total of every one downloading from there server, wouldnt be suprised tbh if it was only 30kb/s.
in the end he got the seperate download with steam and cs1.6, and can i say steam is patetic, i htink valve highered some volantry coders, that probly left half way through cos valve r so ****e. the game kicks him every few mins because of numerous bugs, its slow, the ui sucks, hlsw dont work with it....
and about cheating - why cant they go back to a slightly fixed version of cs1.3 WITH cheating death BUILT IN (none of that VAC crap)
valve have basicly killed cs now, time to find a better online game or for me to just stop playing compleaty, not found any decent games worth the effort of playing recently.
oh, any one seen the new maps, THEY LOOK S***E!!!!!!!!!
valve didnt think of server hosting companys, clans, gaming leages, or just normal players when they done this, after four years of being the most popuar online game, its going to be one of the worsed.

what i hate also, other than the maps seem to have been retextured and look complete crap, is the fact that you cannot use custom models (which i have for each model, as the standard ones look complete and utter pap)... all the servers seem to have some thing which inforces model integrity... what a load of donkey balls.
Finally got it working.
Had to delete the whole lot (old CS 1.5, Steam, manually delete all reg entries) then used the bundled Steam/1.6.
Thank God for that!
hmm for my, i copied the steamApps/counter-strike folder to my desktop, uninstalled the steam beta, reinstalled steam1.0, waited a few hours for it to do something, and then once i'd set up my account, copied back cs.. did some updatery crappage and it seems to work now

What exactly is Steam for ? Is it a patching tool to automatically update Half Life ? Is it to download mods/updates ? Is it a tool for finding servers to play on ? what is it ? thanks
i havnt really played half life before

well, currently Half Life is a game, simple yes?
Then some clever clogs made a Mod of H/L called Counterstrike.
In the past you needed H/L to play cs, when updates were out, you would simply d/l the 100meg file to patch ur cs mod.
Now steam is the new version of cs (1.6). Its there so valve have complete control over every1 who connects to a server. You dont need h/l to play steam, as you can d/l it with steam (altho u dont need to). It is useful for updating, as they can update it little bits each week, rather than lots at once. You can search for servers and have your friends on a Buddy list.
But its crap the only good thing about it, is if any1 is cuaght cheating, there steamID is banned from steam, so you cant play steam without a complete re-install and a new h/l cd key
So what about any false detections of cheating?Originally posted by Russ

Like when the ATI dudes were all kicked + banned cos they were cheating.....
I was seriously contemplating going back to CS when I get my shuttle..... but from reading this....
Nick
no if ur cuaght with ogc or sumthin by vac, u'll be banned. if ur banned by a rand0m server cos they think u cheat u'll be ok.
one more thing, HL grpaics are really crap, they didjnt bring out a new version or something to improve them did they ? When i dl the CS mod, it said something about 2 versions, the mod for HL, and the CS retail. Is the Retail CS a new deign/engine ?

no retails cs is the same, you just dont need hl original to run it... i tried copying over all my custom models for cs (so that the weapons had more than 3 polys each ), but every server had some crap where it inforced model integrity, so i couldnt connect.. the game looks crap tbh, and the shield is a joke.

I think i will wait for CS condition zero to take it up, i assume thats a new engine/better graphics ? right ? because those graphics remind me of star craft ....

Well im still CS less Kin thing, installed the full bundle and tells me my blasted PC isnt connected to the internet..What a heap o junk.aint got for a few days to do a strip out and reinstall
a couple of points are being missed. Steam is NOT couterstrike, it's an alternative game distribution method. you run steam, pick a game from the list, and it'll download & run it for you (with things like levels being downloaded as & when needed). some games are on steam for free (counterstrike, half life, opposing force & a couple of other half life mods), and a payment system will soon come into play to allow other titles as well. your steam username & password dictate what you can or cannot play, so if you use a different pc but the same username, you can use any games you've paid for on steam.
whenever you run a game, it authenticates all the client files against the valve servers, to ensure that there are no discrpancies. this is used for, for example, preventing people from using models with x/z/y spikes through them. patches are done in the same way - you run the game, it determines your version differs from the server, and it replaces your files with the correct ones.
the biggest problem is bandwidth. every game you want to play through steam takes several hundred meg of downloading. do valve have the infrastructure for every CS player worldwide to update at the same time? no, they don't - hence the dreadful problems recently.
that and the steam client itself is a little on the buggy side. it's not 1.0 standard - it's worse than some 0.3 apps i run. but the idea is that they can send out minutge updates every time you run steam - every bug fixed one by one, and the insignificat download time won't even be noticed. again, that's the theory.
the final issue is that the heavy authentication-based gaming means a lot of server fiddles don't work. since Steam runs independant of the WON multiplayer network, WON ID's and CD keys are no longer applicable for server bans - new STEAM ID's need to be used. there is NO conversion process possible, as the ID's are independant. i play Half-Life at my girlfriend's place but have never bothered to bring any CD's - it's all via Steam. This same issue means Mods are no longer possible under Steam'ed HL. The mod files mismatch against the server, and won't run. Chances are that ocne Steam has matured sufficiently games may be available in a Lite (modless) or full (modable) version, for differing cost.
We shall see what the future holds, but be sure you are fully aware of what Steam is. Too many people see "Steam" and read "Counterstrike".
