    Vampire Masquerade: What's the deal?

OK, finally about to start playing Bloodlines, (ok, I know it's not to everyone's taste, but I want to give it a go), so can someone explain to me in plain English what's the deal with the clan system, or direct me to a good guide to choosing what clan/class to join?

It depends what type of character you want, clans like Brujah and Gangrel are really combat based (I chose Gangrel as they have the prtotean skill which as it gets higher lets you turn into a werewolf and is pretty good when you get the intimidation skill up higher, especially relieving someone of a script a bit later in the game ! Also good for the early combat scenes as you can get the wolflike claws with protean so you can do some really nasty aggrevated damage when mixed with other disciplines at the same time)

Game plays in the same way regardless of the clan you are in, just starts in different locations.

I'd keep away from the Nosferatu as to get about you have to use the sewers (cant use the taxi at all to get from level to level and isnt accepted at all on the surface due to being butt ugly !)

Clans like the ventrue are the diplomats, so you can expect a little less combat I believe just more puzzle orientation.

There is a full list of the clans in the manual explaining all the pluses and minuses and what they essentially are.

Playing as a brujah at the moment (finally got the game to run on my laptop as both desktops wouldn't have it) mainly through sentimental reasons from playing the first masquerade game. The toreadors though looking smarter were just too wimpy for me, nosferatu, see above. The malkavian would probably be a laugh especially when you come up against other malkavians. Would 2 fruitloops make a sane vampire? I think I'll play as a ventrue next to get their higher characteristics, that and tosee if they really do puke after feeding on a hooker Gangrel are just a bit too animilistic. Are they prone to frenzy ferral? Tremere are a bit freaky too, dexter's laboratory meets hannibal lector.

The differences are really in the start attributes you get and the way in which some of those attributes are used at a higher level.

Gangrel tend to frenzy when their blood pool hit 0, however, if you spend some experience on upping you're humanity you are less likely to actually frenzy if blood runs out whilst say upping you're experience using a discipline to pick a lock. I only frenzy on it when in a major combat situation now, last time it happened was when I fought the guy in the scrapyard as I was using Protean and also Bloodbuff at the same time to increase the damage on my claws as the guy I was fighting turned into a rather large werewolf (This is the last part of the body on the pier you have to investigate at the start of the game, leads you allover this one including some official P.I work at the bail bonds place)

One thing I will suggest is not to miss any side quests at all as you need the experience and money. In the 2nd area you do some work for a woman that has the gothic church style nightclub, if you sort it for her you become a silent partner in the business and every few days you can go and collect some money !

Also when you meet a woman in the hospital (laid on a bed near reception in a side room, make sure no one is about and be nice to her after giving her you're blood or all hell breaks loose), help her out by giving blood, she eventually moves in with you and helps out.

You can also blackmail a doctor in this area to make money (hes seeing someone on the side and his wife doesnt know about it, follow and write down certain bits of info off the docs computer as you need the womans name for his password)

Once you reach the 3rd area you can up you're humanity in one of the clubs, its not the one with the woman that tells you to go and kill a sabat, its the one thats really lit up. Go to the dancefloor and set him away dancing when the icon appears. Leave him dancing for an entire song (about 5 mins total) and you get a free humanity point.

When you get the actress name in area 3 you have to go back to the cybercafe, same machine as you will use previous to this quest and it tells you about her and where her bones are laid (In the mausoleum in the big graveyard in the back) You have to get the info from the computer first or it doesnt show where she is in there. Once you get whats in her grave it completes the first quest in that area for the guy in the jewelers.

Another litte tip is when you go onboard the ship to get the info about the sarcophagus, find the security room, its off the area that has all the cargo transporters. Use the surveilance cams to get a look at the sarcophagus instead of trying to get there physically (saves alot of bother) then start up the engines etc and thats another quest complete.

I'm busy doing the plague sidequest at the mo'. I'm at pains to be nice to people at present too until I have a bit more intimidation and muscle to back things up with. Not easy, being a stroppy brujah.

My intimidation is high enough now to work on some people, I get green options (which is the intimidation reply) and its really amusing using them, especialy getting a movie script !

I am working all sides at the minute, doing the stuff that is required of me but also helping out the Anarchs, this way theres loads of quests and seems to be making it a bit more interesting with different things that are said.

Thats a pretty big quest that one, leads you to a few different areas. You end up going to this temple type place and theres a whacko guy there with a shotgun, you kill him but its not the end of the quest. You end up going into this big house and in the basement theres a pretty powerful vampire there waiting for you to take out, theres also a Nosferatu you have to take out in the sewers, he has a huge pile of bodies strewn on the floor and also a guy strung up by chains in the background (if I remember right this bit is first and then the temple place and finally the house) Once you kill the vampire in the house you have to venture into the sewers to find the Nosferatu that is in hiding due to the plague. This is the bit I'm on at the minute, this sewer section is really huge and there is no rats or people about to feed on.

A bit I really liked was when you go to the Malkavians mansion, really creepy. Also the mansion you go to previously to find out about the ghost.

I like the way the plot is twisting and turning also. When you arrive at the Malkavians mansion, the cuban (think hes cuban anyhow !) leader of the Anarchs (Guy that saves you're neck at the opening scene of the game) is seen leaving the mansion, when you get to the end the Malkavian as been killed already so they put out a bloodhunt for him. Its really good if you are playing both sides, have to be very manipulative and careful what you say.

It may not look as good as HL2 (even though its on that engine) and it may run bad sometimes due to the memory leak problem but it has a great story and really gets you involved.

Another little tip : Dont talk to the guy in the house in the graveyard until you're levels are up as he asks you to stop the zombies from escaping from the graveyard for 5 mins, its pretty tough. Yeah they are easy to kill but you have to defend both gates and thats what makes it awkward as they are quite far apart. As a Brujah it may be a little easier as you have that skill which allows you to move about quite fast, but as a Gangrel getting to both the gates in time is a nightmare !

Celerity is pretty cool. Especially in the diner when you have to get from one end to the other while 4 guys are shooting at you. Then I switched on potence which added to the naturally strong brujah abilities. I did a feed attack on the last guy standing to top up. I'll remember that thing with the zombies. See if I can have some blood packs handy to top with if I'm gonna have to use celerity a lot.

For that section I used my protean claws and the discipline that absorbs physical damage, yeah I got hit a few times and by the time I reached them my blood pool went empty and I frenzied, it ended up being a bit messy. 4 Sabat, 1 frenzying Gangrel with claws out. Needless to say the battle didn't last long. Owner of the resteraunt went to phone the police so I grabbed him and fed off him to daze him so I could make my getaway without being noticed.

Before you go into the big sewer searching for the Nosferatu make sure you have a few blood packs with you as there is nothing to feed on but a few rats occasionally and you will most likely have to use disciplines to hack into a computer when you are quite a way in. I made that mistake and am now extremely short of blood (Almost out) and finding that I am needing to use my disciplines as there are these weird half vampire / demon things round every corner.

I have a few XPs to spend. I'm holding on to them in case I need to work onan attribute at short notice. I spent some on beefing up the hacking feat earlier though so with a bit of luck I won't have to use blood buff so much. I missed a few XPs earlier in the game and I'm feeling that now.

Yeah, good way of doing it. Bit late for me now given the area I'm in but as soon as I get back out into the open I'm going to start doing that myself. I was lucky in the sewers in my current area as I killed a few of those demon things and leveled up giving me enough XP to up my computer hacking skill as I didnt have enough blood for the discipline. Now I'm trying to work out a puzzle that has something to do with the water pumps.

I managed to turn the electric off but you have to fill one of the flood chambers so you can swim up into the next area, just havnt quite sussed it.

That ones all about speed - thats the only clue I'll give you

I ended up giving up on the graveyard mission and doing the alternate mission instead (go out and find him some "company" basically) - You miss out on getting the rifle, but you can pick it up later anyway.

As a warning, I always found the game crashing when I exited one of the later levels on the boat (don't want to give too much away ) - and the official patch didn't help
But there is an unofficial patch out there that fixed that - and also the a few of the other missions (don't get rewards / one makes you take a humanity hit, rather than a bonus).

On the last mission now, stuck on an incredibly hard boss and no blood
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

You have to stand back a bit to open the first door, had the same prob myself. Annoying that you have to stand in just the right place but it doesnt happen often, only other time it has happened to me is the part I mentioned above about the dancing to get the humanity point. Icon flashes on and off so quickly I only just noticed it.

Nah that wernt the problem! I dont know! it was like doors that dont open, trying to open the wall!

Ive noticed i have to stand inthe right place for the other doors, its annoying me a lot

The graphics are a lot better now, seems they didnt bother pollishingthe start of the game much...

Anyway looks like a really good game so far. Im currently stuck in ocean house, which is annoyingly fun. I went up where the elevator fell down to the top floor - i have found a key for a room up there - however I cant find my way back, or the door for the key

And now Im having a break, before this game makes me go crazy!

I seem to remember that bit took me a while. Bit with the ghost. Central part of the level is the basement, theres something in one of the washing machines, then you have to go into the kitchen and collect something and all hell breaks loose.

Once you have done that and you get out the kitchen the elavator drops from the top floor (have to be quick to get into the alcove opposite (save as soon as you get out the kitchen)) You then climb up the ladder in the elavator shaft and have to jump through the open door from the ladder (like the bit in the first half life with the elavator and you have to work you're way round the edges of the elavator shaft at the end of the office level)
