    Question Problem with ps2

Every year, just after warranty runs out, around this time of year, my ps2 breaks. Ive gone through 3 already. This time, im trying to fix it. Seeing as its already out of warranty, it doesnt matter if i open it up. However, seeing as i am not someone who regualary looks inside a ps2, i really dont know what i am looking for.
Problem is; When loading games, loud clicking noise, doesnt usually stop, and carrys on. when clicking noise gets real loud, games stop loading. For example, san andreas- wont load from beginning load screen, if it manages to get past that and on to the game, it will regualry start making clicking noise, and graphics will stop, sometimes music will jump, and other times a black screen comes up and says 'error loading disk' No scratches on disk, although when playing one new game the other day, after a loud noise, i removed disk and had a series of deep scratches on intervals around the disk.
What could this be, should i just get a new one, once again?

Could be either of the two motors (one moves the cd round, the other moves the lens). You should be able to replace the dvd drive on them I would expect?

How odd, I've had my PS2 since the UK launch date, and it still works as well as the day it was bought..

No no no! Your warranty NEVER runs out, dont be fooled to think so. Sony have a policy in place for the past 2-3 years whereby ANY PS2 (Bigger model) bought at any time is under warranty as long as it still has the warranty sticker on the back. So basically, any un-opened PS2 is under warranty regardless of purchase date.

So call them up, tell them your PS2 has developed a fault and they must offer to replace or repair it for free. You basically have free working PS2s for life.

Heres my page on the subject:
    http://www.marcosmoreno.org/ps2/ps2.htm

DO NOT open your PS2 when you can get Sony to fix it free, they cannot charge you, just keep telling them that the PS2 developed the fault and you have done nothing to cause it

marcos - your website is good. Found a similar one through neowin before, and told us to do something different, but it failed. This looks better, will try it when i get home

same as stoo had mine since release day and still going strong, one thing that sony did tell me when i called to get my brothers replaced, they said it was advisable to sit the playstation flat on a desk and not to use the stands as the drives sometimes cause problems with games and overtime they tend to take a bit of damage. If you call sony you will probably find they will replace it for a small fee, they did with my brothers, cost £16 and they dropped it off at the door and took the old one with them cant get fairer than that

Mine developed a fault around a year and a half after it was purchased. Had to get the whole lens unit replaced as it wouldnt load any dvd's and majority of games were taking around 5 mins to load in. Seems to be a bit of a buggy console.

However the new slimline PS2 has had the known bugs sorted out apparently.

The first PS2's that hit the UK on release day dont suffer the problems either as Sony shipped them unlocked (I mean for movies etc, mine plays any region under the sun) Once the second revision came out they locked it to region 2 which could be unlocked with engineer codes. I haven't seen the inside of a new slimline ps2 or seen any problems with the other models. Aslong as mine works I am happy had it since release day so lets just hope it goes for a while longer.

mine has just done the same wont load any games, and makes loud noises, its a version 4 so few years old, warrenty is voided tho as i opened it just to clean it, but for a new lens its £40 so might aswell save and get a slim line, incase its not laser. but lost for what to do now with it really nothing but tothrow it away.

Yeah, that was bs, they simply talked out of it and made it seem your fault. Just persist that the console has developed the fault on its own through normal use. Dont take any crap as its their policy to to repair/replace it for free since so many PS2s broke down.

Well, will fiddle a bit more with it, as warranty is deffinatly void. If not, il get a new one. Just looked on ebay - there are so many faulty ps2's on there. Il sell it to someone who wants to fix it or use it for spares, and put the tenner towards a new one

Yeah, thats what i'd suggest then. There is one more thing you can try before selling it, and that is the adjusting of the lens. My guide covers only the cleaning of the lens and the lubrication of the travel bars. But one other big thing is adjusting the lens which have yet to try. When i try it i'll probably expand my guide to include it. With nice new photos too

i found a guide to adjust the lense, did that. Worked well without the cover on, but once i put cover back on it seemed to slip back out of place and didnt work anymore. Ive given up, im afraid
