    When you actually have it...

it's not all that great. Bought a PC for gaming Jan 2003, money was tight and could only get an Fx 5200 and said to myself that all would be better with a better card. In the meantime, I played every game I had @ lowest settings and naff res, or oldish games, thinking that somehow everygame would be better with amazing graphics. Xmas 2004, finaly get a near top of the line card (sig), shove it load up the same games i'd been playing for ages and..sure they look great, but in say UT2004, who's got time to notice what it looks like when ur fragging away? Obviously other games were stunning, Doom 3 @ Ultra high settings had me staring in awe ...obviously after about 40 mins of actually playing it I got pretty bored.

I've been playing quite a lot of Far Cry, which has kept me coming back purly by gameplay over graphics, you cease appreciating the image quality after a while. So the point I'm trying to make is that if you're 'going all out' when buying a new card, don't bother going for the top-top unless you want to run it insanly high res. Looking back on it, I should have bought a plain 6800 rather than dish out for a gt. Apart from a decent score in 3dMark, thats all I'm gaining for now. A better card won't improve your gaming expierince drastically, it may enable you to play new games that you couldn't before, but gameplay is what you play for.

    A good post...

Something to remember is don't buy a high end card unless you can use it. I mean can your monitor handle the max resolutions or does 120fps make a diff compared to 60fps.

    Hence why I have a 6800.

There's so much hype these days, is it me, or is the x850xt-PE only slightly better than the x800xt-PE, and yet there are those who sell an arm and a foot just to get a pre-order on it.

I've can't remember the exact facts and figures but it probably gives you 10-15fps more at high resolutions. People with X800's shouldnt really feel obliged to upgrade!

whe I brought my 6800, I weighed up the benefits of a 6800 GT against cost, and decided it wasn't worth it. In the end, I'm glad I chose what I chose. Although I'm pretty sure my monitor isn't as good as it should be....

woah woah woah!! lets not bad mouth these new fangled GPUs they're at least 3 times better than the previous generation of GPUs (eg. the FX5950Ultra and 9800XT ).

If you look at my pc specs on my sig you'll notice that hardware is getting on being around two years old now.

I plan on investing in an X800Pro which i'll mod into an X800 XT, its an investment that will extend my middelaged pc by about another two to three more years.

remember when the 9700pro came out, it cost the exact same amount as todays top-of-the-range GPUs and even now i'm still able to get 2,517 points in 3D mark 2k5, play doom3 with eveything set to high at abou 35-45fps and hl2 with aa and af at the max at average of 50-60 fps.

But being a hardcore gamer the cost of GPUs are probably the last things on my mind.

The X850XT is pretty much the same as the X800XT yes. ATi are aiming it at those who couldn't get an X800XT due to supply problems, and are still looking for a high-end card, it is not aimed at X800 owners as, well... its the same card running a few % faster (at stock).

As for the thread - I own an X800XT, and I've not played anything for a while now - I was glad of my card when I was playing Half Life II, but since I finished that, I've been playing a few classic games, and my X800XT has been ticking over waiting for something else to get its teeth into.

    Maybe if I was a h4rd c0r3 gamer, like Fatal1ty, I'd need an X80XT more.
