    Wink I/O devices in CS:S

This isn't specifically related to the clan, but I'll use it as an example .

If you look on our server stats, you'll see that I'm currently at the bottom of our clan list in terms of skill. I don't think that my system is letting me down, therefore, I've turned my attention towards my input/output devices. So the question is - does using wireless keyboard/mice slow responce times?

Also, if you're at the top of the list, could you says if you're wired/wireless.

    Thanks

Yes I know it's likely that I'm just not very good at the game, but I'd just like to see if this could be a big factor too .

Links to the stats page can be found hidden inside my sig.

I used wired. Have played before with wireless gear and I have no problems with it tbh.

If I were to buy a new set it would probably be wireless, most newer ones have literally no lag.

Problem is though that you're probably refering to most new "decent" ones. Mine was literally the cheapest that fitted my specs. I'll tell you a little bit about what I brought and why:

I wanted a wireless keyboard/mouse combo. I didn't want a mouse with a docking bay because I thought the mouse might die when i was using it. I didn't know they could charge only when they needed it, and automatically turn the charger off. Therefore, I wanted a mouse that charges thorugh a wire. This way, I would use it and it could charge at the same time.

Occasioanlly though, when I press a key on the keyboard, and use the mouse at the same time, the mouse won't work. This is usually fixed by putting the charging cable in for a minute.

I know I brought something cheap, but could this be the cause?

you cant blame it on your computer.. its mostly down to practice etc... just load up a game of quake 3 with 20+ bots, play for 30mins, then go play cs.. see if you feel your reactions are any better

i have a similar problem, where I've got one of the new "dodge" mice or whatever they're called from MS - the scroll wheel is waaaay too sensitive, so I'm going to have to replace it with something else. The keyboard is also way too squishy - prefer something a little more tactile... mind you - can't complain... i got it from scan for just under a tenner (for the basic wireless bundle)

    Eww.. Trust!

It might not be whats causing your bad performance but trust products arn't exactly designed for games. I'm using an MX 1000, which am liking a lot. Although it was on the expensive ide and might and took a bit of getting used too. Have a look at the MX 510 for a good gaming mouse. As for keyboards anything will do.

I was looking at the MX1000 wireless bundle from Logitech - but nobody seems to be offering it, and it's not even for sale in their online store.

If I was to build my PC again, I'd do a WHOLE lot differently. The thing is though that I don't want to spend out on something else unless I have a reason to. IE - someone to sell something to or if it breaks. I'm sure most people would have changed their first built if they could - I've already changed my graphics card (sold my old 1 to brother), HDD (it broke, RMAed it, and sold that to brother too), and added more memory.

from a review of the razer diamondback, better IO devices can really increase your skill. The reviewer's kill rating increased by about 50% over the mx710 using a diamondback. It was compared against a mx1000, a mx 710 and a microsoft intellimouse explorer.
The diamondback came first then the mx100 followed by the intellimouse then the mx710

I cant remember the link but if i find it i'll show it to you

I very much doubt that, maybe at the top, "pro" level where a fraction of a millisecond might make a difference from fragging or being fragged, but at the level the vast majority are at, it's not going to make the slightest difference.

BTW, there isn't such a thing as an MX710, only the 510 and the 700 (yeah, I know there's now a 516, but that's sparkly new, and that "review" is quite old)

yeah, I've seen it before, and didn't think much of it, all the graphs have had their axies tweaked to make any differences seem enormous. (the difference in kills was only actually 3 frags..)

The photoshop comparison was pathetic, I've used an mx700 in photoshop for years without any accuracy trouble.

I *really* don't get how they say the mx700 suffered from rf lag, that was the whole point of the mx engine, it cut lag from the old mouseman design (which does have lag) to pretty much nothing.

Most of these tests would seem to be similar to the sort of thing what lie-fi comes up with for power cable tests etc..

It's all pure snake oil stuff, anyone with any talent will kick your backside in an fps even if they were using an old knackered ball mouse and a keyboard where half the keys don't work..
