    Easy

Don't get me wrong I'm not blowing my own trumpet here or anything but is it me or are modern games a bit easy, is to much effort going into making these games look pretty and not enough on actual game play?. I know things have moved on from my spectrum zx48k with rubber keys (Robin hood kicked ass) but even on the hard settings after a while you begin to wonder how boring it would have been if you chose "normal" at the beginning. I have re-introduced myself to the pc game-playing scene (now hl2’s here) with a new system so if you have any recommendations for a real challenging game it would be great if you could.

Im into a bit o adventure/puzzle solving with my weapons baby.

Of-course online is another option when I get connected fragging real people has got to be more fun! any good sites?

I’m kind’a digging warrior within at the mo, although I seem to be steaming on through this too.

Yer agreed on the NES!! Ive jsut moved house so only managed to bring along my Snes & Dreamcast!

About the new games ill agree, however its not so much modern games its more FPS's in general! Think about it, HL1 isnt exactly new (over 5 years now) but that was still easy on hard. Before we used to get decent adventure games and points n clicks (Wow, got to play monkey island again when i get home! Ooooo how about grim fandango???)

Ah well stupid lucasarts stopping doing points n clicks.... and stupid sam and max 2 being killed!

when playnig through hl2 and realising how easy it was i figured it was just cause fps is all i play really along with a bit of generals

i mean fps huds and things dont really change from game to game and it doesnt get any harder, mabye they need to make some variation on the fps scene, not sure what
but just to make it different and more tricky

Get a GameCube and Super Monkey Ball, then try to get to and complete Master Mode.

Yeah, definately go with that statement, when Unreal 2 was released it looked amazing but I clocked it in 3 days and around 8 to 9 hours of play. Some of the older games took ages, Nomad Soul took me weeks to get through it as did many others but now you are lucky if you get 7 - 8 hours play out of a single player campaign.

Another thing is that a few years back all the games came down in price so they were better value for money, they all seem to have creeped back up in price again.

I will agree that games are getting easier. The end result seems to be that kids growing up on these easy games suck at video games in general. My younger brother had some friends over to my place once and they tried some 8bit games--they completely suck.

Zool on the megadrive. even on easy (which i swear is harder than normal) no one i know can get past the first level without using a continue. hards an understatement. i cant actually think of a really difficult game on the pc now i think about it, gay.

Costs more to make games now so you get less content.
They're easier to appeal to Joe sixpack who just bought his first PS2 and can barely use both hands at once.

I make games for a living - almost every game I've been on we had to make it easier because the publisher didn't think it would have enough mass market appeal otherwise. Seriously some games started off about 5 times harder, really nails in some cases, but by the time it's in a box it's piss easy.

Super Monkey Ball is fantastic my mate has a GC and we play it all the time, Monkey Golf is my favourite. Half Life 2 was terribly easy (especially the second half) but the atmosphere created and the overall polishing was rather good. IMO modern games have become more about the immersion in the environment that is being created not about how quickly you can bash the keys or remember timing sequences as 8-bit games were. I really prefer long atmospheric games that are fast pace where you continually move from scene to scene over trying to steer a character through an ACME chomper that kills you 3 in 10 times, so you have to repeat 15 mins of a game to get back to it. Then die again. Maybe i just sucked at old games but i truly like virtual environments that are well thought out and immerse you for long periods of time - without repeat.

I find it better to play through a game on normal and not get annoyed all the time or have to load and break the flow of the story. I played Call of Duty on normal and it was fine. Not very difficult, but fun. I then played it on hard. And found that while it was more challenging it was less atmospheric because i died more and had to load. Yes a challenge is nice, but if you die a lot you lose immersion.
