    First Impressions:

    • It's smaller than I thought it would be
It's very easy to get finger prints all over it.
All of the Sony PSP menu's can be set to English at first setup
It's well built, with definite Sony Style qualities
The screen is VERY vivid and clear
Great viewing angles, even from the side etc.

    As for Ridge Racers:

    • Graphics are stunning
Intro really shows off the PSP talents
      Controls are easy to use
Driving is easy to pick up, but is harder to truly master
Sound playback is superb, even through the stereo speakers (Nintendo DS only has mono sound)
Some of the menu's are in Japenese, but thats coz the game is hard coded. (It was easy enough to start playing tho).

Overall, I'm very happy with it. If I'm honest, I was slightly dubious when I forked out £299 for it that I may be dissappointed but now I have it, the PSP really is a work of art with massive appeal to it's targert market. It's a real talking point in the office as it's sat on my desk charging.

    Out of 10 so far?

9 / 10 (Only the Japenese in RR is my gripe, which once I play more games with english text etc should make it a well rounded unit).

    (taken from another forum)

Nearly 5,000 units are returned to Sony for buggy button; Kutaragi unapologetic about the handheld's design.

TOKYO--About 4,800 Japanese PSPs have been returned to Sony due to problems with the handheld's square button, according to a recent interview with Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi in Nikkei Business magazine.

Kutaragi acknowledged that the button is less responsive than the others, in part because it's so close to the PSP's 480x272 screen. Because there isn't enough room to put the square button's detection switch directly underneath, it's off to the right, making it less responsive--and sometimes causing it to stick.

Nikkei Business reported that, to date, .6 percent of the 800,000 shipped units have been returned to Sony for repair. Kutaragi was unapologetic about the issue: "This is the design that we came up with. There may be people that complain about its usability, but that's something which users and game software developers will have to adapt to. I didn't want the PSP's LCD screen to become any smaller than this, nor did I want its machine body to become any larger.

"The button's location is [architectured] on purpose," Kutaragi added. "It's according to specifications. This is something that we've created, and this is our specification. There was a clear purpose to it, and it wasn't a mistake."

Offering additional testimony praising the handheld, Kutaragi said, "I believe we made the most beautiful thing in the world. Nobody would criticize a renowned architect's blueprint that the position of a gate is wrong. It's the same as that."

    Pic with the front off.

    I've seen this else where.

You use the [] button as brake in Ridge Racers, and X to accelerate etc.

I've had no problems using the [] Button so far, so can't understand the fuss??

Im very happy you like it. For me the machine in terms of console power is fantastic. What I am very annoyed with is that although my unit is only just over 3 weeks old, it looks more like 6 months!!, even air seems to scratch it and due to the shiny effect of the cover it shows up badly. Sony or a 3rd Party need to release "Express On" covers, well with the removal of a few screws. I dont care if it voids warranty to replace it. £250 for sommin that looks well used after a couple of weeks is poor in my eyes.

Thats why I like the "clam shell" design of the GBA SP and DS.

same as the anti-scratch resistant ipod, did that stop people buying it?
