How do I get up the lift shaft in HL2?

Just entered Black Mesa East having played catch with the robot dog.

I come across lift shaft with what looks like a ladder in some water, and a wardrobe, drums and a desk.

    What do I do?

I have tried everything and can't move past this point.

Jenk is correct, use the grav gun to move all that crap out of the lift shaft and then use the grav gun to hit the padlock and that grate over it will fly open and you are on your way
