Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
Is anyone playing this? Me and a friend have been playing it for the last couple of weeks and I'm finding it an absolute blast.
100 players parachute into a "battle royale" style arena, similar to a map like Day z or Arma in terms of size and scope. With nothing but fists you have to scavenge for supplies, weapons, med kids, vehicles, armour etc. After some time the play area reduces in steps to force you into an ever shrinking area. If you go outside the area you loose health, it's minor in the first stages of map reduction, but gets worse as the reduction steps go on. There's a blue dome that shrinks around the map as you try to out run it and get within the new player area.
The game suits many play styles, which are all equally valid. But even campers are forced to move eventually.
The tension is superb when you hear someone close by or a vehicle approaching. It can also be played in squads, teams of 2, 3 or 4 people, making it great fun with friends over voice chat.
It's currently in Alpha and can be picked up for £23.49 if you shop around. But despite it's occasional quirk is very playable in it's current form and highly entertaining. Check it out!

Re: Unknownplayer's Battlegrounds
some of the HEXUS Towers/bit-tech team here play, (most nights I think) and I am being forcefully cajoled towards it :)
if you want me to edit the thread title, just say... Playerunknown...
-
Re: Unknownplayer's Battlegrounds
Play this too, rather addictive.
-
Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
Oops thanks for that Zak, I've edited the title. It takes a lot for me like a new game, but this has a great balance of accessibility, tension and fun. Great game and highly recommended.

Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
if I had the evening mental family bandwidth Id' be all over it like a rash
PS- turn your detail settings down.... if they're too high the grass looks awesome and hides people... but .....sack off the grass and you can see the buggers!

Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
I am a bit put off paying nearly £30 for an early access game, especially one on UE4,after ARK which has been in early access for years and they never ended up fixing the bugs.
Hence I am a bit worried about buying this currently.
Once PUBG comes out of early access(or they drop the price) I might give it a go,but Planetside2 also has massive battles, with upto 200 people at one point and that is free to play.
Edit!!
Apparently Q4 this year,so might wait and see closer the time! :)

If you look at the Steam concurrent players list it was very high up(still reasonably high up even today).
The problem with games which are early access is that you are relying on the devs honesty that the game will ever leave early access. So many early access games have started off well but have been abandoned, and even popular ones like ARK have been in early access for years. Then you get all the fans on forums defending on all the early status of the game(like ARK and so many others),when the devs start delaying stuff more and more.
PUBG looks the kind of game I might like, but after ARK,Spacebase DF9,etc I am not trusting early access, and even the dev said the full released has been "delayed" to Q4 2017.
£25 to play an alpha or beta of a game which "might" be released at the end of the year,is still a risk when £25 to £40 will get you fully released games.
I would rather pay more for the game I know which is actually a full release TBH! This is why I think I will wait until Q4 to see whether the game is released or not.
Its bad enough so many "full releases" have bugs at launch like Mass Effect:Andromeda, which was literally the biggest disappointment for a game I had for quite a while, that now we have to pay for prototypes of games, with no guarantee of them ever being completed especially at anything between £25 to £40 for these "early release" games.
Early access is like Kickstarter, you might get a final product or not get a final product at all and Valve really needs to regulate it better.
The issue is larger companies are now using it too,and I fear it will become like when proper expansions got replaced by DLCs.
After ARK,Spacebase DF9,etc and seeing how many people did get literally fobbed off(including some of my mates who bought them),I won't trust early access as anything other than a "buyer beware".
Basically anything more than the current status of the game is not a given and it does not matter whose name is attached to it.
Look at Star Citizen - I actually had doubts about the game and the way it was funded in a similar way and I had people jump on me for that even on here. Its got XYZ attached to it,so people don't need to worry. That was years ago,so has the game been fully released yet, despite people dumping more and more money into it?? Nope.

Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
I see your point regarding early access CAT, but frankly I'm happy to have paid £23.49 for the game in it's current state - it works, it's relatively balanced and it's already provided me with hours of entertainment. I've been burned with early access too (Ark being the main example, which really did feel alpha...) whereas PUGB works effectively as a game in it's current form. Yes it's a bit of lottery with early access, but on this occasion I can personally recommend it. Whether the game is worth £23.49 is down to personal circumstances.
-
Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
I picked this up yesterday and was a little unsure at first..but i've now sunk in far too many hours :) It definitely feels like early access and it has a long way to go to make it into a fully fledged game imo, but its a lot of fun and well worth your money even in it's current state.
It really does feel like playing "Battle Royale" (or that dodgy rip off "the hunger games") - there is so much tension to every game and it really is so varied in how you can play. Whether you want to join the hordes bailing out of the plane immediately and face a rush to find a gun, or want to jump off on your own and take a bit more time to build your gear, or something in the middle...there is a role for everyone. Personally I like to loot a few houses on my own and then go hunting when I find a rifle - not done any sniping yet or tried the heavy weapon approach, but i'm really enjoying it as it is.
It's single biggest issue in my opinion is the rather clunky 3rd person camera angle - to play well you have to confusingly swap between 3rd and 1st person, and it takes some getting used to. The game is an order of magnitude better when you swap to first person view only, but this does give you a disadvantage when sneaking about as your visibility is reduced. They have announced a dedicated 1st person only mode is coming though, so can't wait for that it will be a much better game then imo :)
There is a lot more they can do with this format - would be great to see a number of "official" variations (the concept of lives perhaps, or variations on map/player numbers) and hopefully it will maintain it's popularity. Something else to enhance the "solo" player experience would be nice too - perhaps a 50/50 team split so you can play with multiple people on your team but dont need voice, for example.
Well worth the money though go buy it!

Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
Agreed with all your points Spud but with regards to 3rd / 1st person modes. I too initially thought 1st person was better, but having spent a couple of weeks on it now I play solely in 3rd person. It takes a little getting used too, but ignore the fact you are viewing from behind your character and just use the crosshair when aiming. Hold the right mouse button down when shooting for improved accuracy generally and then click the right mouse button to aim down sights when using a scope to zoom in temporarily for (effectively) 1st person mode. This I've found to be the best solution as you can get scope accuracy as needed and the benefits of effective close up combat with shotguns and SMG with the added benefit of the increased field of view / ability to check around corners.

Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
I started playing this last night, had a couple of goes solo, and a couple duo. Really enjoying it.

Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
I wonder whether I could ask a huge favour of someone who's got PUBG? I bought the game a week or so after it became available on early access, but decided to get a refund, because I wasn't able to reconfigure the keys the way I needed them. Specifically, I need to be able to use the Tab button to aim down sight; in the version of the game I tried, the tab button was used to access the inventory, and for some reason, I couldn't assign it to any other function. The game has received many updates since I tried it, and I'm just wondering whether the key assignment has been changed? Can anyone tell me whether Tab can now be reassigned to aim down sight? If so, I'll buy it again I think!

Will give it a go when I get home.

After another few yours last night I think you are right - it's just an alien control method to me initially but once you get used to it, it works well. A bit like with Splatoon 2 today - when you start it up its all motion controls and feels horrible..but after a while you realise they default that way for a reason and it makes a lot of sense, after some mental retraining!

I will have a look around on the forums to see if there is any talk of changing the hard coded keys. Seems strange because you can also set a different key for inventory.

Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
I bought it, played it twice, couldn't get into it, returned it.
Will reconsider once it's out of Early Access

Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
I enjoyed H1Z1 KOTK for a while, but it got samey and the developers weren't the best. I keep getting tempted by this, but the price is too high for what it is. And I just don't have the time at the moment. I think I'll grab it soon - maybe get some Hexus Co-ops going

I think once its out of early access that would be pretty fun :)

Plunkbat appeals but I'm definitely waiting until it leaves EA. Got burned by Rust which is still unreleased.
At least it's not Ark (paid DLC for a game that hasn't been released yet? WTF?) or Wing Commander: Feature Creep, which is scheduled for release on the 4th of never.

Yeah DayZ is about to release.... 4 years later

Just tried and it fails on the tab front, can be unassigned from Inventory but aim fails to work. :(
-
Re: Playerunknown\'s Battlegrounds
I would buy this, even early access if it was half the price. We need a Hexus group to form teams from with voice comms first though. Not that much fun without a team?

Really? That's very annoying :/ Well maybe in the next patch...
-
Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
Well they have issued a hotfix which has resolved the server lag - finally been able to play some FPP mode! I have to say i'm loving it - its a huge improvement and this is now the game I was hoping it would be :) Much more fun than 3PP for me and a heck of a lot easier to aim. it's still got a long way to go - some weapons are odd in FPP, the camera height needs some work, motion can still be a bit janky..but on the whole it is a great update and a nice step forward.
The new crates are great too - not for the items (which I dont care about!) but the fact they are selling for £2-£5 on the steam marketplace at the moment. I had some in game currency saved up and sold a few crates - made £15 :) So you can kinda get the game half price (or free)..if the market holds up, which it might do given that you can only earn a limited number of crates per week (6? not sure).

It's still a lot of fun playing solo - but yes I think it would be better in duo/squad mode..i'm up for some 4 man squad games if you guys are :)

New update and tab works for aiming! Just remember single click is zoom in a bit, double is look fully down the scope.
-
Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
Seen a few of my friends have this and was looking into it. I'm pretty sure 10 years ago this would just have been a multiplayer mode on a normal game though? Sounds like it's good to play, but at most £20. The recent Steam reviews have slated it for going back on the promise of not charging for in game items.
Remember when the MOD community was about sharing some fun rather than milking people? I'm all for the Devs making the step up into the professional development scene on the back of a good mod. Maybe I was just spoilt by everything that was done on the back of Half-Life...?
-
Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
As far as I am aware the paid for items are clothes that have no benefit in game, so pointless.
As for the mod community I think they figured out many people were taking p out of them, despite the amount of work they put in to game many players kicked up a stink about relatively modest charges. Compared to the price of HL2 mods that went retail this is pretty cheap. DOD-S was $20 on release back in 2005.

Pointless in the main but i've made £40 this week selling items and crates on the steam marketplace :) OK so "made" is maybe slightly generous as it's going to get spent on other steam games, but essentially PUBG is currently funding my steam games and has more than paid for itself.
I'm also playing it way too much at the moment - 40 hours over the last 7 days apparently...which is crazy for me. It's pretty much all I am playing at the moment.
Since the patch dropped last week i've actually moved back away from FPP and started to really enjoy the squad mode, me + 3 randoms. Sure you get plenty of idiots on there but when you get a squad who knows what to do, uses voice to call out enemies/targets etc and generally works with you it's a great experience.
You are right Jimbouk this is a game that 20 years ago would have been a mod - it reminds me so much of Counter Strike in that regard (both in the fact I sunk all my free time into it, and how it makes me feel)..but even CS went commercial eventually (even if CS v0.6 was still the best version they made, but I digress).
It's well worth they money though - i'd happily pay £30 for it, but it's cheaper than that :)

Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
For anyone on the fence about this game, it's honestly one of the best multiplayer experiences i've had in years. I've put 250 hours into this game since its release and i've made a PROFIT on it by selling crates and clothing items. Can't recommend it enough.
-
Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
I completely agree with this, I'm still fairly new to it but I'm hooked. I've never known a game that has converted so many console games over to PC either.
-
Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
I got this recently, and I've been enjoying playing with +3 random in a squad. So much fun and it gets so tense when you are in the final few people/ teams!

Re: Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
I've got it and barely touch it. It's not pick up and play. Just loads of aimless wondering around a map for ages looking for weapons then dying and having no idea how you got killed TBH.

Well if you want more of the dying and less of the wondering around:

Also is the very high price of £0.

Doubt either my passively-cooled kaby lake i5 w/o gpu, nor my i7 7500U also w/o gpu could handle this so maybe I'll stop playing TLOU on PS4 and build a gaming beast so I can play this on my 4k tv.
Wow, lot of brags in that one.

There was an update which allows users to create our own custom matches but you need 10 people. I thought it could be fun if we had our own event mode sessions etc. Would anyone be up for that?

Believe it or not it's actually fully released now.
An absolute joke for content, 2 maps (on release) and lack of game modes and options. Then they have the cheek to make you pay for hats and socks.
Has so much potential, just watch the Hunger Games, Maze Runner & the original Battle Royal for what it could be.

hey, lets face it.... way back, ARMA2 was as solid as a wet toilet roll...
genius when it worked.. but laggy buggy and played like a dog
worth fighting through the break/errors though?

Mini Militia App Lock 7Zip
Disagree with it being highly unstable.
I've had about 500-600 sunk into PUBG and god knows how many nail biting, heart stopping games I've had. Hours and hours of squading up with team mates and blowing your jeep up since you decide to avoid gunfire and drive it straight into a tree at speed.
I think for some people they are being far too demanding and not realising what kind of work is needed to go into a game. The clothing is all choice, one doesn't gain an advantage having a jacket or some fancy pair of trousers.
