As usual you *don't* need to own the game to add the DLC/Season Pass to your library, but of course you will need to get the game at some point to make use of it.

Trouble with the extra content and season pass on Star Wars Battlefront is that it REALLY splits the community up.
It is literally broken down into loads of sub sections, base game, base game with 1 DLC and so on. Then though the DLC maps aren't put into normal rotation, you have to specifically go into the DLC menu and select which DLC you want to play on. You don't even get map rotation of all the season pass DLC maps which is pretty bad, each is literally in it's rightful section.
I enjoyed it when I bought it but wish I hadn't wasted money on the season pass on PS4.
Thankfully the sequel is going the same route as Titanfall 2 with extra maps etc added for free over time and cosmetic stuff can be bought if you want it.
The problem is the number of concurrent players who are actually playing the game; I just checked, and for PC it's only 1323 at the moment:

The numbers for Xbox & PS4 are a bit higher though. I don't think there was a single-player campaign for Battlefront either, which limits its long-term appeal. Maybe making the DLC free will boost the numbers of online players though by encouraging people to buy the base game? I suppose that's what EA are hoping...
The game looked amazing, but had no depth at all and I don't think DLC will change that...
I think for SWB2, i'll definitely wait a few weeks to see what other people think of it first.
