    UT2004 crashing problems

I'm loving my new UT2004 but what I'm not loving is when I come out, either by chosing 'Exit Game' or Alt-Tab, the game locks up then the computer crashes and restarts!
    wtf?
whats going on? is there something I can do to prevent this? or what could be going on that causes this in the first place, cause its p*ssing me off, this SHOULND NOT happen!

just found out a load of stuff about various drivers having known problems...
    this mean anything to anyone?

    edit c:\boot.ini

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=AlwaysOff /fastdetect

the option in bold disables DEP and should prevent crashing with the new drivers.
    I also saw this too:

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /Execute=OptIn

Open your boot.ini file and edit it. make sure the bold part above, looks like that. That will stop the blue screens in ALL games.
what is DEP and what does it mean when its on or off. if I turn it off so I don't get any problems what does that mean for everything else no-game related??! just wondering what its far reaching consequences will be...

found it on another forum : . apparently windows SP2 has some funky things going on, in fact been reading a lot about it all over the place. nVidia know its a problem but haven't done anything to solve it (curious that its a 'nVidia: the way its meant to be played' game... so far it requires a role-back to drivers 61.xx which is a tad lame...WinXP SP2 doesn't like UT2004 and AMD64's and any drivers higher than 61.xx apparently. BSOD hasn't hit me yet but definitely annoying crashes on exit (at least I get to play the game first tho! still its not idea having to restart each time...)

There are plenty of articles talking about DEP, read some early AMD64 reviews they have it all listed. Sorry I don't have a link to hand.

Report back and let us know if this did indeed fix your problem as it sounds intriguing.

speaking of quitting UT2004, heres a handy keyboard binding, press tab and type 'set input q exit' so you can just hit q to exit the game. I've been using that binding since the origional Unreal.

This sounds really weird, only affects AMD64 systems, is there any way of disabling DEP in the BIOS or whatnot?..

dunno...think is a Win XP thing, seeing as its in the boot.ini file
    what does DEP mean anyway...
    *me goes and checks*
    ah, DEP= Data Exectution Prevention
and it does....well, just read here, sounds very much like more MS medling where its really not needed. well, for games anyway! go here:

It dosn't sound too weird, seeing as A64 processors are DEP enabled, and all others, as far as i'm aware are not.

You could try turning on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only, if it is not setup like that already.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

Not really, it isn't a Microsoft initiative, although you could hold their software DEP to blame.

well, I've disabled it and all seems good now...no crashing. might be better on new driver release in which case I'll turn it back on but for the mo' no real biggy having it off - at least not noticed anything strange happening - so unless suggested otherwise it stays off.

god I love the new UT2004's vehicle match-type-game-thingy...the one with power nodes and cars/planes etc. very cool!
