Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?
Pretty much the same for me as most posters here. Used to play lots of FPS/competitive games, used to be an achievement hunter and play games on hardest difficulty; nowadays I just play on Normal difficulty and just want to enjoy a good story, I don't have time to hunt down every single last thing in a game or die over and over trying to beat that last hard enemy.
Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?
No it hasn't changed a great deal, which would explain my love of emulation and playing all the old stuff and being somewhat lah-de-dah about these "interactive films" that pass for games these days ;)
Shaggy dog story: I was a huge fan of Elite back in the day - used to play it all the time on my Acorn A3000. When Elite Dangerous started being spoken about I was very enthusiastic - backed it on Kickstarter and all that. Years later when I finally had something I could play it on worth a damn, I found it so hard to get into - just too much stuff going on. Maybe it's my advancing years but I just want to get out there and do stuff like the old Elite. I don't want 3 different subviews when I'm looking forward. Interdiction? WTF? The first time it happened to me I sat there like a dummy because I didn't know what to do. I was being barked at to jettison my cargo (which I also didn't know how to) and thankfully the police came by and chased the pirate away. I got to where I was going, docked, then didn't fire the game up again.
TLDR - it's too bloomin complicated, it's simpler for me to get an Archimedes emulator up and running and play some original Elite, and it's more fun for me.
I will go back to Elite Dangerous at some point, I just got really annoyed with all the faff of getting around and getting interdicted on my first bloody outing.
Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?
I’ve found the limited time means get more picky on which games and then invest that time heavily in one or two games. Big Elite Dangerous fan but will play in spells for a few weeks then leave it for 6 months.
Surprisingly finding games like Fortnite are good for a short 30 minute spell now and then when can’t invest time in a progress game like E:D. Also, surprised myself recently with really getting into AC:Valhalla! Slower controllable pace seemed to help.
Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?
I was thinking about this the otherday, I don't think it has.
Almost 7 years on since I last played any proper shooter games, I'm falling back in love with a bit of mindless fun on Call Of Duty again.
I thought I'd got over it, turns out I just needed a bit of practice to get my skill/reactions back in good form and it's providing me some much needed stress relief after a busy day at work.
Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?
i think for me my tastes have changed based on the unavailability of those i used to play with. Families, jobs, other hobbies etc have reduced their playtime so ive have gravitated towards more single player than multiplayer.
Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?
Very much. Less stress inducing games, and more mind taxing games. Much more satisfying when you stop craving the stress to have fun too.
Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?
As mentioned by a few previous posts, as I get older I've also been drawn more toward games that can give a good amount of fun in a short amount of time (due to not having much free time anymore) and don't require a large time commitment. I do miss being drawn into an immersive game world and sinking a lot of time into the game but times change ...
Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?
World of Warcraft I play occasionally, it no longer requires the time it once did. Don't get me wrong you could sink your whole life into it if you wanted but you can also pick up and play, Halls of Atonement dungeon for instance can be done in 20 mins. No longer the couple of hours you used to have to invest. Raids etc still take a long time but again depending on which ones you are doing. But I find the pace easier now, not really part of any guilds, don't have to commit to anything.

It might be time to take a look at WoW again. The biggest reason I stopped playing was the massive time commitment required to stay relevant in the game.
Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?
Levelling is stupidly quick now, they reset all the levels so max level is now 60.
You can now level 10-50 through any expansion you want like you can choose to level 10-50 through wrath of the lich king or if you fancy pandaria. Just see Chromie and level how you want to. Further than that levelling 50-60 which is the new Shadowlands expansion takes 10 hours or less

What's the end game PvP and PvE content like these days?
Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?
PvP you might look at come patch 9.0.5 where they are re-introducing valor points so probably more enjoyable then, I don't know when you last played so its difficult to say.
PvE is pretty much a free for all, the raid or dungeon finder you can join and it will automatically add you to a group and take you to the dungeon/raid where you can run a dungeon in 20 mins or a raid in not much more than that. Seriously if its your first time in a dungeon the pace is crazy, you come out with your head spinning.
There are still the hardcore raids and dungeon difficulty levels for guilds etc but it doesn't need to be that way.
I mean I don't play that often and I am already virtually all epic with one legendary item. I mean legendary which you actually get after doing some quests.
When did you last play wow?

Thanks for your input! I appreciate it.
My last expansion was either Cata or MoP. I can't remember where exactly I stopped. I enjoyed the Battleground and Arena grind for PvP gear and then they did away with that ...
Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?
A while ago then :) Its a lot different now, if you buy the latest expansion it includes the previous ones

Oh so they fixed that too then!? Now I definitely need to take a look.
Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?
As you get older, it seems that time becomes more premium and so I found myself playing a lot more singleplayer games where you can play save your progress and continue whenever you wanted. Games with long grinds were gone until the pandemic hit and you find a bit more free time.
