Why is the Xbox so good?

The Xbox seems to have very week specs compared with a modern day pc, ie the 800oddmhz processor and the ,i think it was, geforce3 0r 4 level graphics card. So then how come it can play such hight quality games? I guess this is the same for all consoles.

mabye because it came out like 3 years ago now?

when pcs where about as good as that, of course with pc evolution it was already getting outdated the day it came out

games still look ok on it, because the people that make them can programme them to work well on those exact specs and not have to worry about other spec of system, like the pc ones do

so they can make it run smoothly with increasingly good graphics just by adding more programming

of course no console will beat a personal computer imo

    Pete

edit: could you not just post this in the other xbox thread below this one? and save room?

think just a little....(sorry if im being a tad anal here)

because it's a games console not a pc, so you don't have stuff like windows ect taking up cpu+ram power, and also they run at a lower res as they are on a tv not a monitor.
but mainly because they are coded just for the spec of the xbox and not a wide range of pc specs.

I see now, i thought it was something to do with no windows but did not no about the programing and I didnt think of the resolution of the tv. I was just confused why we all bought £300 GPUs when we could stick an old cheap one in.
    Thx

the resolution is much less, i.e. the TV can only play rather low resolutions so high hardware isnt needed,

also there is no aa and af, so againe the consoles lose out, basically the consoles are a uniform platform for gaming for the masses so that games are guaranteed to work (well sort of!) lol!

Yep, those are the three main reasons; 1) It's known as a 'closed system' - an Xbox never changes so programers don't have to write generic code that works on a million different system specs. They can optimise the game for that exact setup and they should know every chip and transitor and what it can do inside out. 2) Low resolution with no AA on TV. 3) Low system overhead, such as Windows XP and all that entails.

Anyway, put Halo on and play it through a good monitor sitting next another monitor with HL2 playing. You will see that things have moved on quite a bit.

TV's res is 640x480, hence why the graphics can look so nice

i always liked the idea of a big cheap rear projection tv, but are they really better than plasmas? i know they have not burn in effects, but they always look so washed out in the shops?

T.V's in shops are A) Rarely set up correctly and B) Often run off a decidedly weak signal in my experience.
