That looks pretty good XA04, though I have my reservations as to whether console multiplayer is as versatile as PC multiplayer. There again, maybe I'm just bias.

Well it is going to be massivly produced, so they can buy 10's of thousands of gpus + cpus which will drive costs down as they will be buying in huge bulk. plus they will push Xenon Live or whatever it is called + get games sales so I reckon they will meet a release price of £350-400.

xbox = a consol made by a company that specialises in PC software...the controller is aweful and the games are readily available/better on a PC!
unless they changed teh controller int he new one I can't see myself likeing it anymore than the 'old' one

I think the people of Chav'land would lose their credibility if they went for a PC and not a Playstation... There again, they'll be in debt for 10 years after buying a Playstation 3.... There again, debt has never been a major issue to chavs...

I think the PS's chav label is a trifle unfair... its not sonys fault that it is popular with virtually everyone inc. so called chavs. There are games on PS2 for everyone, albeit flight sims... they have pretty much every other area covered.

while we're at it, can we get our ideas straight about the spec versus cost? these things will be AFFORDABLE. launch price will be under £400 (and probably under £300 since the £400 price point is another thing that killed the saturn). This is how console economics WORK. some of the numbers being thrown about in here are just plain silly. £350 just for the ATI graphics? try a few pounds maximum for Microsoft.

we're talking EXTREME mass production here.

    So, part by part:

    # CPU - Xenon's CPU has three 3.0 GHz PowerPC cores. Each core is capable of two instructions per cycle and has an L1 cache with 32 KB for data and 32 KB for instructions. The three cores share 1 MB of L2 cache. Alpha 2 developer kits currently have two cores instead of three.
IBM POWER5, which the machine's cpu is based on, already has 2 cores as standard. Now, simply canibalise some of the extra functionality the same way apple have with G5 versus POWER5, glue a core onto the already extensible design. Voila. a single CPU with 3 cores. 1Mb of cache between all the cores isn't much to write home about at all. plus, since IBM are involved in all 3 new consoles, they have some seriously large scale production going on. economies of scale++

    # GPU - Xenon's GPU is a generation beyond the ATI X800. Its clock speed is 500 MHz and it supports Shader 3.0. Developers are currently working with an alpha 2 GPU. Beta GPU units are expected by May and the final GPU is slated for a summer release. The final GPU will be more powerful than anything on the market today; in game terms, it would handle a game like Half-Life 2 with ease.
Cheap & cheerful. The gamecube's graphics technology gave birth to the r300 core, in a similar vein this may be a generation ahead of what PCs have, but it will be a simple cheap mass-produced part. PC gamers are always eager to suggest PCs come first & consoles imitate. bear in mind Soundstorm was designed for Xbox, then transferred to PC later. P4 machines started using RAMBUS long after nintendo decided it was expensive & slow, having used it in the N64.

    # System Memory - Xenon will have 256 MB of system RAM. Keep in mind that this number should not be equated to typical PC RAM. The Xbox has 64 MB of system RAM and is a very capable machine.
an awful lot for a console, but with the HDTV resolutions being discussed, the graphics chip will use much of it

    # Optical Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon will not use Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Games will come on dual-layer DVD-9 discs. While the media is the same as that of the current Xbox, the usable space on each disc is up to 7 GB. The drive is slated to run at 12X.
Pennies, especially if it ends up as a toploader

    # Memory Units - Xenon will use 64 MB to 1,024 MB memory cards. 8 MB is reserved for system use, leaving a 56 MB to 1,016 MB for user data.
cheap. a 128mb SD card is £10 retail, 1Gb is £50. use that as a guide.

    # Hard Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon's hard drive is optional. 2 GB of the drive will be used as game cache. The final drive size is still being determined.
unlikely to see much mass-market penetration, likely to be popular amongst [people who play a lot of online games though

    # Camera - Xenon will have a USB 2.0 camera. It's capable of 1.2 megapixel still shots and VGA video. Photos can be used in-game and for gamer profiles. The camera can also be used for video chat. It's unknown if the Xenon camera will allow for EyeToy-like gameplay. Developers are currently using a simulated camera driver.
maybe a gimick, maybe useable for more than games about washing windows. time will tell.

    # Sound Chip - Xenon does not have an audio chip in the traditional sense. Decompression is handled by hardware, while the rest of the chores are handled by software. DirectSound3D has been dropped in favor of X3DAudio. The former was deemed too inflexible
Software sound, there's enough CPU hanging about to do it

There is nothing about this thing's spec to suggest a particularly high launch price. If anything, it's likely to be cheaper to manufacture than the first xbox was, with the disposal of the hard disk & sound processing facilities

    Well put Jo...

This console WILL be cheaper than the Xbox to manufacture... MS will have learnt their lesson on that one you can be sure of it.

I must say, this will be one interesting battle of the titans to watch. Btw, anyone heard much about Nintendo's offering? They seem to be lagging behind (again!).

nintendo are just better at keeping their cards close to their chest.

and 'lagging behind' can be seen as another way of saying 'watching for mistakes'.

in terms of leaked specs, early indications show project revolution will have similar hardware to xenon, but probably with fewer bells & whistles & a correspondingly lower price point.

bear in mind nintendo devs are already used to PowerPC and ATI, from the gamecube.

Well, I have always bought PCs and Nintendo consoles, because that gives me the best scope. Lets face it, most of the games being released on PlayStation 2 and Xbox come to PC, whereas Nintendo make quite a lot of their own stuff.

And the watching for mistakes thing is all very well, but lets face it, when they've released their products in the past, they don't do it very efficiently. I find they get more time to make their console, but when its released, they can't really compete with consoles that are already on the market.

I do hope Nintendo do well though, as I am still a huge fan. I think I'll probably get the new Nintendo console for Zelda/Mario above anything else.
