Picked up a copy this weekend and last night I finally had chance to give it a quick blast. First impressions are very, very good.
Installation was a slight bore, it crashed on my machine when swapping discs (GTR comes on 2 CDs) and then hung the second time. Third time lucky though, no problems with online registration or discs checks.
Those of you familiar with the demo will be at home. The interface is exactly the same so it didn't take too long to set up. I highly recommend getting GTR Manager so you can install/uninstall mods and skins easily, plus you can install "The Ring" as a third party download.![]()
Anyhoo, first thing I did was turn all the aids off, bang it in full Sim mode and chuck a Lambo on Barcelona. I know this track pretty well, since it's an old favorite of mine from many other racing sims. The track layout in GTR is perfectly faithful, and since I know the track back to front it was an ideal opportunity to try the new cars out. The Lambo was as expected - slightly heavy, but stupidly quick in a straight line. Swapping it for a Viper I found the drive much more forgiving (great engine noise too!) but it's a lot more difficult to turn into the corners. The Ferraris are deathtraps, always wanting to power oversteer at the slightest provocation though of course with a careful right foot or milder setup, this can be sorted.![]()
As well as the powerful GT cars, you also have the slightly less "in your face" NGT cars. These are often lighter, slightly detuned affairs but they're a lot more "fun" since you can really chuck them around. I had a quick blast with the Lotus Elise, and found it pathetically slow but damn that engine can rev!The Porsche cars are great fun too - the 911 Turbo put a smile on my face for sure...
...which is why I decided a 911 Turbo on the Ring would be a nice test for the multiplayer. It's easy to set up and apart from the annoying joining stutter, intial impressions are that it's pretty much perfect. My online racing pal Pee and I gave the Porsches a damn good thrashing in all respects, and apart from the "Oh ****, here comes the Carrosel (sp?)" moment where we both piled into the barrier, and the first corner after the main straight (more barrier bending) us Ring n00bs came away smiling.![]()
They say time flys when you're having fun. Last night, 3 hours felt like 30 minutes.![]()
