Does anybody know if final fantasy XI online is online only? Or is it single player too?

Thats pretty bad, I begrudge paying for an online game and then paying for a monthly fee, I see World of Warcraft now has an expansion pack, so what exactly are people getting for their money. I had always believed the monthly fee went towards developing the online world.
Its like a license to print money for Blizzard, I'm sure FFXI will be the same, not for me, and besides I just don't have the time to invest, I have friends, family, girlfriend and work commitments.
OK.
Just wondering, thanks guys.
Lol is that Guy Goma in your pic? absolute legend!
Anyways, yes you do need an Online connection. You also have to pay monthly. If you have a PS2 and wanted to buy it for that, you will also need to get yourself a HDD which only fits in to the older versions of the PS2's and not the newer PStwo version.
My advice is to not get it. I heard it was terrible, laggy and a grind fest which is not something I would find enjoyable.
i found it quite dissapointing really, what i always liked about FF games is the story line, how can you have a story line in a MMO?!
I disagree; both FFXI and GuildWars, imho, managed to achieve storylines successfully.
FFXI did it by having ranks and quests to move onwards in those ranks, working your way up in fame and towards defeating whoever it was that was wreaking havoc on the world. Each of the expansions introduced new and separate storylines; one of them involved Bahamut, if memory serves. Plus quests for taking on other classes were big on storyline or, at least, were much more in-depth than I've come to expect from other MMOs.
GW's single player campaigns are definitely storylines and to say anything else is ridiculous. Everything you'd expect from an RPG storyline; cutscenes, missions, character development... It's all there. Sure, each of the campaigns is standalone, but there are ties between them if you're willing to look.
Just because the more mainstream MMOs like WoW and EQ have failed at achieving storylines doesn't mean that "MMOs can't follow storylines."
FFXI and Guild Wars have storyline, and are successful MMOs, and WoW doesn't, and is a successful MMO. I have all three.
I stopped FFXI after about a week, its flaw is that it can not be windowed legally, there is an illegal window app which you can have your account banned for, but other than that there's nothing to let you communicate with others online.
I like MMOs like Guild Wars and WoW because I can chat on IRC, Xfire and MSN while playing. I can read websites, manage downloads. However, if so much as a windows update pops up, then FFXI closes itself. If I had two PCs I might consider playing FFXI, but as I don't, I wont.
Hello, where server will reopen?
when reopen?
FFXIV is generally a better version of FFXI, but also comes with a monthly fee and no single player.
Contrary to what some others are saying, I actually like that these companies go with a monthly fee instead of having pay to win mechanics, since it seems that all MMOs must have one or the other nowadays to keep their cash flow going. I struggle to enjoy MMOs where I feel compelled to pay more for extra things.
