Would a gtx 1660 work fine for this?
Would have thought so, min spec is a 970

970 is apparently recommended spec for best experience according to MS store... cobblers I think. But a 1660 should be OK with a few things turned down. I'm (eventually) going to be on a 1060 so even more things turned down. I'm trying to work out the best time to take the plunge - if it gets included in games that you get a xbox pass discount for then I'll trial a pass first just to get my discount.. but it only applies to games at least a month old..

A friend is trying to run this on a Ryzen 1600, GTX 980 and 16Gb RAM, 512Gb NVME SSD...CPU and GPU usuage seem to be idling around 10-20% usage, giving him 15-20fps in game @ 1080p medium. He's deleting cache files and reinstalling, does anyone have any suggestions? It's a fresh install of windows, up-to-date GPU drivers, AMD chipset drivers installed, Windows build 2404 (or whatever the latest number is...24** anyway)
Kombustor and Prime95 results are as expected, so it seems to be a software issue with the game itself as far as i can see.
A further wrinkle for those who bought it on Steam. Downloading the game (on any platform,) only downloads the launcher. You then start the game and it downloads the other 90gb which takes some time.
Given that you're technically "in game" while it downloads unless you're on a very good connection it'll take hours to download the game proper.
Why is this a problem? Steam will let you refund a game up to two hours of game time. So by the time you've downloaded it and (potentially) discovered it's bugged or your system can't cope you're outside the refund window.
I'd strongly suggest buying a months Xbox gamepass if you're considering this game, just as a trial option.
Speculation: The game is using DX11, and I would guess is extremely heavy on draw calls - this is why nVidia cards currently have an advantage as they handle command lists for these calls more efficiently in DX11 (only). This means weak CPUs are going to be hit hard and there will be some unusual bottlenecks.
There is a 3dmark test API overhead feature test, I'm not sure if it's there on the free version but I think so, which compares draw call performance on DX11 vs DX12. By itself it's not going to be helpful, but it might be worth running it to get a benchmark of the DX11 draw call rate and then seeing whether and tweaks to the computer help with that (it might be quicker than launching FS each time to test).
In terms of actual tweaks, the first one that comes to mind is enabling hardware accelerated GPU scheduling. Windows settings>system>display>scroll to bottom click graphics settings, on next page there's a toggle for enabling it. *IF* it's supported on the 980. Probably not.
I did mention this above but v-sync appears to be bugged and will lock under your target FPS: 20 for 30 lock, 50 for 60 lock etc.
Ask them to set a driver level frame limit through the AMD/Nvidia control panel, RivaTuner etc. Given the game type, locking to 30Hz at the driver level isn't too bad.
Also, air traffic and ground traffic are apparently resource hogs.

Some good performance suggestions in this post^^

Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

My PC is creaking under this game, tried lowering the graphics settings to low and get the same frame rate as Ultra, even with v-sync turned off everywhere.
At low my GPU is only being utilised for about 40% and at Ultra 100% so i suspect its CPU bottleneck for the system.
My brother plays a lot of flight sims and they have traditionally needed as much single core CPU speed as possible to get the most out of them and that is defo one thing this system does not do well at.
I didn't realise it uses real time weather in game. Here's a recent video of someone flying into hurricane Laura https://youtu.be/QqqUiXztuws
Have given this a go using the xbox game pass, loving it. I have played a few flight sims over the years, all the way back to MS Flight sim at school in the mid 90s. Really need to get my HOTAS and track ir close up and running properly to enjoy this.
I'm curious if people who were never into flight sims bought into the hype and paid the price for the game but now, months later, are left not playing it at all.
I am looking forward to trying it out in VR, but I'm not a flight sim person, so I think it would be more of a novelty for me that I'd check out a couple times and rarely again.
Definitely one on my to play list one day, the graphics and realistic scenery are beautiful but are there any serious simmers out there that can comment on how realistic the actual flight dynamics etc. are compared to other older gen flight sims?
As recommended above, I've picked up the Xbox Game Pass (which is currently on promotion at the moment) to give it a try before purchasing the game.
