We had some brief discussion on the Quest 2 further up this page, I nearly bought one instead but was a bit concerned by some folks saying the link cable for playing Rift games can be a bit sketchy. I do like the idea of being completely cable-free though, I bet that's awesome.

    It is.

Yesterday my wife bought a Tai Chi instruction game. I enabled the hand tracking mode where you don't bother with the hand controllers the thing just lets you interact using your bare hands, it is quite freaky.

One thing I never bothered with on the Rift is watching Netflix and the like in VR, but it is a surprisingly usable media viewer on the Quest 2. We were also watching some VR films, omg the "Wrestling Kittens" video is just so adorable

Oh wow! I didn't realise you could interact without the controllers, that sounds amazing! Definitely need to look into this more!

Now how am I supposed to resist the temptation when you've gone and mentioned some adorable kittens

I was playing Racket:NX last night, that gets sweaty quickly, sore this morning!

Also, link to the kittens video... for the wife?

I thought the hand tracking was very impressive, only downside is I had to sort of twist my wrists unnaturally for it to see my finger gestures more consistently.

lol, it was on the Oculus entertainment screen, just searching for "Kitten" should find it. My daughter watched it last night, and the headset went on to autoplay a video on giant pandas. I didn't think that was as cute, but still good.

OFC it then went on to play a video that had an adult panther right up it your face. Not so cuddly

Re: Do you have any interest in VR?

I’ve had so much hassle with my windows wmr headset that I completely gave up on vr. Windows updates have completely broken it twice and now it won’t do 90hz. Steam or the WMR portal frequently crash or report error codes. Not to mention tracking, floor height and frame rate issues. Also, if my computer sleeps then wakes with the headset connected then it somehow prevents my monitors from coming back on.

Occasionally both wmr drivers and steam decide to play nice together with their versions and I can play something. Was a shame, initially loved it, but the constant problems wore me down.

If I was upgrading I’d definitely be looking at something that wasn’t windows based. Perhaps a PS5 headset if that’s ever a thing.

My only interest with VR is because of Half Life Alex, didn't have the means to play it but slowly been putting a PC together for it. so hopefully this year will get to play it

Re: Do you have any interest in VR?

... and finally I get the oculus link to work on my upstairs PC.

Uninstall latest AMD drivers, install version 20.10.1, and there I am in a hanger staring at my Elite Dangerous Anaconda

Bit of a bummer I have to do a full days work now before I can boot back into Windows and have a play. Also slightly annoying that I bought a USB 3 gen 2 PCIe card and a second cable trying to track down the problem, but I got there. I'm sure they will come in useful.

Can I remember how to fly a ship is the other question, I haven't played for something like a year. Had best go buy something small, slow and cheap to smack into walls

I presume I'm not the only person that completely missed this offer ...

So having got Oculus Link working, I notice I have a new game in my Oculus library: Asgard's Wrath.

Apparently if you have a Quest 2 and you activate Oculus Link (I think before the end of January) then you get a free game. Which is nice.

Have you thought about trying an Oculus headset? I had a Rift for 2 years and it worked faultlessly. I’ve also just bought a used Rift S and it’s working perfectly too. Setup was pretty painless too.

I saw that in my library, doesn't seem bad for free but it's a massive download so I haven't bothered, yet.

Elite is fantastic in VR, I spent countless hours just enjoying pretending I was in a real spaceship, like being a kid all over again

My only gripes were the galaxy map was fiddly as hell in VR, and bouncing around on planet surfaces in the buggy made me feel pretty queasy after a few minutes.

Also, if you're pretty rusty, might I respectfully suggest a Sidewinder until you're back in the groove. I seem to remember the rebuy cost for the Anaconda is pretty hefty, if you break it

VR with an older device isn't a lot of fun, especially if like me you had never ending sensor issues and a small room.

The newer devices with inside out tracking are a game changer in my opinion, can operate in a much smaller area or even sat down for certain things, no line of sight needed for sensors so walls not too much of a problem(old room was L shaped). Resolution and motion issues are a lot better now

Just seen on Reddit that the offer is open to people that bought the Quest 2 from Sept 16
